I'm going to be picking up a 90 F250 that the engine needs put back together. I'm wondering how much power I can make out of one of these things? Ideally I'd like to be faster than a chipped superduty or at least as fast. :sly How many performance parts are out there for these? I see the moose injectors and pump are the way to go and a turbo kit. Is there anything else? Is anyone running compound turbos?cookoo:dunno

Not much high performance upgrades out there for our trucks. You can add propane, water-methonel (window washer fluid) and nitorus for more bang. A few have done thetwin turbos with plenty of gains too. Barnett Performance offers a 3 stage porting of th heads. I did my own and also followed thru with the intak andexhaust manifold logs for a little more flow. Head studs are the only real way to go if you try sme of the above and Mahle hard anadoised top pistons or ceramic coatng the piston tops to keep some heat out of the motor. Its not going to beat a chipped psd either. Those motors can make lots of hp with differant chips.

I figured there wasn't a whole lot you could do but it won't be able to make 300hp? I'd really like it to be able to beat my brothers 01 with a superchips chip. My 00 with a ts chip will spank his all day long I'd just like to rub his face in the idi also. I might just have to chip my van and get him with that then. :sly

Even with a turbo and propane injection, I don't know if the IDIs will make 300 hp, but they are real good at torque. Stock for a 6.9 is 178 hp, 370 lbs/ft of torque. They will do a lot of work, but are not going to make a big impression doing it. Chipped PSDs have so much more flexibility, I wouldn't take on that challenge.

The hallmark of IDIs is their simplicity and durability. Challenge your brother to a truck pull when his PSD has 300,000 miles on it.

i myself beilieve differently i belive it is very possible to make 300 hp with out going to extreame, i would say start with a good 7.3 or 6.9 and put all new gaskets, stud the heads intake and exaust manifolds, get a moose ip and injectors, an intercooler and matbe a little water injection, and say about 15 or so psi of boost on the 6.9 and about 18-20 on the 7.3 with studs and she should hold it with stock compression ratio and that should make close to 300 hp i think it would anyway:dunno

Take it from someone who is in the same boat as you. Buy a powerstroke if you are used to the power of a stroke. I have had 2 of them and just got a idi. I am gathering everything needed for a powerstroke swap in my 86

I've got a 00 F250 a 96 E350 and my dad's 01 Excursion I can drive if I need the powerstroke power. I would like to have something a little different. I'm looking at making it a mudding/sled pulling toy. I'm not looking at being competitive at it I just want to have a little fun. I'd also like to use it as a back up to my 00 F250 and haul my GN around.

Maybe I'm crazy but 300 hp doesn't sound like it should be impossible. What are some of the draw backs of the IDI keeping it from making power? I know there aren't a whole lot of injector upgrades but the moose injectors sound pretty promising.

to answer that question IDI indirect injection says it all
knowing how it works versus direct injection and how it works

Moose pump/injectors and turbo. and i dont know where you pull but all the tracks aroud here you would get killed in the stock class w any mod you could think of on an idi and they wouldnt let you pull in the stock class anyway, you would get bumped into the mod class

Stock vs. Stock, the Superduty blows away the IDI every time. I have never driven a PSD but I hear that a turbo IDI keeps up with a stock 1st gen PSD pretty well, but as soon as it gets a mild chip its back to beating you considerably. Now if you have PSDs for your power fix, and just want a bit more power, your IDI can be very good and fun to drive with only the addition of a turbo, gauges and turning the fuel up some. 300HP at the wheels will be a hard # to get without more extensive mods. I think 200 at the wheels and 250 at the crank is more likely. If you want to make a lot of power and you have a budget to work with I want to see somebody lower the compression to around 18.5:1 or 19:1 and use either a Moose Pump or a DB4 pump and Moose Injectors, turbo, intercooler. It would be different and I bet very powerful, but with all that money spent it would still be slower than a mild chip and a SD or a 12V Cummins and a few tweaks. Thats my 2 bits.

who the heck at a pull track thats to busy looking at powercroaks duracraps and cummins are going to know a stock idi from a highley modded idi? a moose ip probly looks just like the stock one and so does the injectors, and idi's came with turbos from the factory so no one would never know the diffence

Dyoung... Pulling a modded idi in a stock class isn't really fair. I know thats not what you are posting you would do so please don't think I'm pointing a finger at you. Thats not what this site is all about... You posted some interesting ways of making hp but... don't think making boost above 13 lbs will help anything. You need an intercooler with boost above 12 or 13 lbs. Otherwise the boost air temp is going to be well above 300 degrees feeding the motor. That ruins any gains right there. Yes... You make a very good point about all the pumps and idi injectors "look" the same... But anybody will be questioning your hp and runs if you can beat their stock psd trucks. Sandbaging is fun if done right. Its when you break out that it gets ugly and competers start asking questions about mods. These heads on the idi can be tricked out but thats something for another posting. Show up at the rally and I will show one of my heavely ported new offshore idi heads.:sly

I don't think 300HP out of an IDI is out of the question. Hypermax and DPS have both supposedly made a lot more than that. The problem becomes expense and reliability. You'll get an easy 50HP just bolting a turbo to an NA IDI. That gets you to 220 HP right off the bat, and that is with stock compression settings. Getting another 80HP should be doable with lowered compression and more fuel, and more boost with an intercooler. Guys like Barney that have gone the extra mile with dual turbo's and internal tweaks have been giving modded cummins trucks a fair run for their money, but I don't think they have dyno'd them, so who knows what kind of power they are really making.

a little off topic but i thought i would tell you this, the other day someone posted you injector video on fte, well someone over there who has a hot rod idi (im sure you know who i mean) said he might be interested in them and that he might have to swing buy and give you a visit to see one on a pop tester
