You can't grab the hub and pull it off?? You should be able to do this. Use a bar and pry it off, if necessary. The seals can grab the shaft tube.

There is no sliding.

Uh, oh.

Take off all brake shoes and hardware, you are going to have to pry. No need to take off the wheel cylinder, just don't step on the brakes while working in this condition. Take pictures first so you remember where/how they go back. Use a couple of large screwdrivers or tire wrenches to get behind the hub and wiggle the hub loose (we hope). How long did you drive it leaking oil? Since you used a paper towel to plug the axle tube, I can suppose there was oil leaking out?

If either one of the bearings spun on the axle tube, it is going to be a bear to remove the hub. Does anything smell burned in the hub?

Inside was wet, but honestly I put the paper towel in because it is very dusty here.
I've been leaking into the drum for who knows how long. Drops have hit the tire the passed month. My diff also has been leaking, and I've been temporarily topping off the gear oil. I dont smell anything burned.

Um, if it's the hub that's stuck, why couldn't a 10 pound slide hammer puller with an axle attachment yank it out?

No seal can hold up against the mighty 10lb slide puller, not even the highly vaunted 'Scots seal'...

Not sure about a spun bearing though... now that, I would imagine, would call for Riot Warrior's b.. f.. torch!

Come to think of it, your three jaw that you had hooked up should work, take an impact driver to it, it will come out, if it's not a Harbor Freight puller!

I would prefer the sliding hammer trick, wouldn't want to flatten the end of that spindle...

Hopefully you can still salvage the spindle...

There as that is clearly stated...here is OLD SCHOOL COOL way for oddball stuck stuff....

Start by installing bearing hub nut back on spimdle....not all way on but a ways...maybe flush to outer portion of spindle.

Big long heavy chain....fittimg over wheel studs...install a nut tighten down...

Again for good meazure....What I am about to share is done if you CHOOSE to at your own risk to personal safety....

now walk back as far as you can with chain pull snug...take a step or two forward and play...crack the whip with the chain...this makes a violent slide hammer that usually whips the hub off in a crack or two.

Remove chain undo spindle nut remove hub...

What I am about to share is done if you CHOOSE to at your own risk to personal safety....

Using a pick to hook the outer bearing to pull it out of the hub will not hurt the bearing at all. Unless you drop it

I live in the middle of nowhere so I will have to wait to get a slide hammer.

The socket I am using has scored the spindle but it should still be ok.

As for the chain idea. I'll playit safe. I see myself ripping the truck off the jack stand like that.

OK, don't pry. It does the same thing as a slide hammer without a lot of drama.

The slide hammer will also create some significant side forces. Brace the truck as best you can to mitigate any sideways motion. The more solid the bracing, the less work the slide hammer will have to do to overcome all of the extra motion you will create.

Be safe, whatever you do. We are all hoping for the best outcome.:popcorn

This is a conundrum. Hope the slide hammer works for you. Is the pinion nose leaking, too? You may as well fix all the leaks at once, as long as you have it apart and jacked up. I asked about the rag because most differentials will run oil out of the axle tube when you remove the axle. The burning smell would have been if there were no oil left and the bearings started spinning. It could be that your bearings are just real tight.

Do you live on the Medford side or the Hart lake side?

I live in between the two, near Crater Lake.
I got a hold of slide hammer from Autozone. We will see if it work again in the morning when Im back to my truck. I had drained the differential and cleaned the cover before attempting the hub. I might have to put the gasket on, refill and drive it down to where my buddy has a torch and a more proper garage.
Ill keep you all posted.

10 lb slide hammer vs 20 feet chain....

My money on chain....and if you have the other wheel on the ground it likely wont pull it off jack stand.

I would have put a couple big pry bars and a hammer to it by now. As long as you don't mess up the surface the drum mounts to, nothing else is a critical dimension. A dead blow hammer around the outside of it while you spin it may dislodge the outer bearing then you ought to be able to wiggle it off. Unless the outer bearing is gaulded onto the spindle, I can't imagine why it's so tough to get off. If that's the case, excessive force may be required and hopefully the spindle is salvageable.

As a preventive measure after you fix seal, etc, make sure the vent is clear. It is located at the brake line fitting on the axle tube. My pinion seal stopped leaking after clearing out the vent.

I still haven't got it off. My 10lb slide hammer seems like it would fit on just about any axle except the sterling. The three atm attachment doesn't fit the 8 lug pattern. The two arm attachment comes off when I slide the hammer.

I did the long chain trick. It didn't take it off but there is a 1/8 inch of play now.

Sorry guys but my problem is due to lack of proper tools and garage. And lack of experience.

I've tried all I can here so far. My next attempt is to remove the brakes and try to pry.
