Help identifying fuel filter head

i was at the junkyard today and seen this setup. Would this be a better setup than my 7.3 with heater head. Seems a lot simpler and does the return simply go into that feed barb?

Also does anyone know what this means on the injection pump of same truck

That is the 6.9 filter head. From what I've read, the 6.9 fuel filter is 6 micron vs 10 micron of the 7.3. The filters do not interchange.

It is a simpler system, but it has no provision for a water/fuel separator. The 6.9 had a separate water fuel separator. The 7.3 had it combined in the fuel filter.

Yes, the return line connects to that barb.

It does now that you mention it! I wiped the casing down and seen the block mark and wiped towards advance and couldn't find the line on the pump. I didn't wipe towards retard so maybe it was way back

I'm the second pic are you asking about the white sticker on the gear cover? I believe that is from ford dealerships showing when they replaced the IP.

Yes the white sticker, I was thinking maybe it had to do with replacement. Idk why it was timed so retarded

I though the white sticker was the date of engine manufacture. I would read that as March of 1987. This would make sense since 1987 was the last year for the 6.9.

I would keep your current 7.3 idi filter head, as you are able to use a filter with a water separator integrated in it. That's pretty important when running a diesel. The 6.9's had a separate water seperator & the filter head they used didn't allow for a water seperator/filter to be used, just a plain Jane filter.
You can either use a pipe plug or freeze plug to block off the fuel heater hole once you remove it. I did and it worked great.

Would a leaking fuel heater cause drain back? I noticed mine is leaking and occasionally if it sits it's hard to start

It most definitely will, just like a leaking return. The only return leak that I have personally seen not cause a drainback was in the return to the rear tank on our 92. The leak was right above the rear axle and only really leaked while the engine was running.....
