Hi all, I have a 6.9 engine that was all professionally rebuilt but has been sitting in the truck for several years. Also it was never turned over or started. I thinking of installing head studs and wondering if I pull the engine, can I just remove the head bolts and install the new head studs or do I have to pull the heads and replace the head gaskets too? Thanks. Dan

I prefer to install studs with the heads off so that I can be sure that there is no crud left in the bolt holes. You want the stud to grab as many threads as possible. There's less of a chance to pull the threads out of the block when the studs are installed all of the way into the holes. Another reason to clean out the bolt holes is that the studs are long and stick up above the heads farther than the bolts do. If one or more aren't all of the way down into the holes, you may have clearance issues with your rocker arms.
