SAd that the shop allowed these heads to leave that far out of spec. But really good to know they see the error and are willing to make it right.. Thats a good shop.;Sweet

talking to my machinist today, and told him i performed a piston to valve clearance check.

"hay man, i have .015" gap inbetween the valve relief on the piston to the valve"

which, i did not, with my babys, i have not had any time at all.

to which he replied....

" you have WHAT??!!!
thats no good, bring the heads back and well make em' right"

as he opened the book and the spec calls for a .046-.060 recess.

"bring em back, well fix them"

EDIT: in regards to the facts post, i gave him governmental jive :D

;Sweet

How did the check go? Did you do just one cylinder or more? Which cylinder did you do the test on , one with less recession or more? Finally, did you take pics?

If you read carefully, he pulled a little "shuck and jive" as they say in Hazard County.

Well. The head gasket popped today.
Had to take it to work, had to get on it, and BAM!
Nice cloud of white smoke coming out of the tail pipe now.
She's down until it's fixed

Should I drive it home 14 miles?

I drove a cavitated one 45 miles, had 20 gallons of water withe me. leave cap loose, drain coolant when you get home, run a little to flush cylinder.

Leaving the cap loose so it can't build pressure is about as safe as you can be but.. Still no guarantee it wont hydrolock and blow the rod, piston, cylinder or everything. How long do you plan to let it sit? Reason for question is the oil WILL have coolant in it so thats thruout the engine. Letting it sit will drop out most on the oil in the pan. But whats in the lifters and bearings will stay till you run clean oil. Do the heads. Change the oil and refill with the cheapest oil you can buy. Run it for maybe 2 or 3 days. That will hopefully burn off the left over coolant in the oil. Don't know what you run for coolant. Just remember it may take another oil change to rid the coolant from the oil but it will resolve out.

FWIW, I drove my '91 F350 over 200 km back home after it blew the rad cap and neck right off the radiator! I replaced the radiator and coolant, but left the rad cap loose like icanfixall said. I took it easy and kept a close eye on the gauges. Stopped about half way and topped up the rad. It made it! Maybe that is why I have so much respect for these engines. :hail It got overheated good. Blown head gasket. Cracked heads. Yes, the coolant will steam clean the cylinder just like laserjock said.

well i got her home and zero white smoke.
i didnt open the cap.
she got a little warm, so i turned on the heater in the 90 degree heat.

im done driving her.
i will be pulling the engine sometime this week.(hopefully)
ive got a couple of things left to acquire.
been super busy.

with the white smoke i experienced, and then no white smoke on the trip home, fingers are pointing at a cracked head in my eyes.

the heads came back today with the proper specs!

Glad you made it home in one piece. Best of luck pulling the engines and make plenty of time for pics.. Otherwise none of this ever happened and you just want attention because the boys are taking the lions share of it now...:D

See Calvin.. I do use the happy faces here and on FB.. Yes... "SHE" was posting some of what you and Ken were reading. But I was posting the first comment.:backoff:eek:
