Okay. I guess this pinion seal is different than the one I removed. Can I please get confirmation this is the correct orientation?

I'm 99% sure it is because I think the pinion won't seat if I turn it around. I just don't want to drive it in and then have to order another one because I was wrong.

Not 100 % but think it's backwards...again, without an image of it the other way, kinda hard to say.

Can you post two more images on a flat surface of seal only. One side then flipped to other? then we can see both sides LOL

Okay. Here is the seal with the side I had toward the oil facing up. Notice that the rubber sticks out farther than anything else (if you can't tell from the pic, take my word for it).

Here's why I think it goes this way. You guys tell me if I'm crazy. If you turn it around the opposite way, 2 things look like they are going to happen. First the yoke is going to touch the rubber face as well as the inner ring. That's going to put the wear mark right against the dust cover on the yoke. This is the seal reversed from the way I had it.

Second the seal is going to stick out from the housing because of the inner lip shown here.

If you flip it the way I had it, the profile of the seal will match the profile of the housing. The seal should set flush with the outside of the housing, and my eyeball says the seal will ride at about the middle of the yoke.

So what's the verdict?

You had it right, easiest way to remember is the spring on the seal goes against the oil side.

Yes. I looked at franklin's pic above and in fact you are correct. It just all made sense. And now it's back together. :D

The spring is always facing the oil side of the seal. So far I have never found a seal that fits correctly when the spring faces out away from the oil. Glad you figured it out. Doing a job twice sucks.
