It just seems odd to me that Ford went to all the trouble of a DMF when raising the RPM's would also get rid of the noise, for something that was just annoying. I guess I always assumed it was damaging.
Is the dual mass flywheel even offered anymore? I have an original one, it worked when I swapped it for a single mass, while I was putting a new transmission in my 91. But, can you go to a Ford dealership service department or a parts store and order a dual mass flywheel, or at least a clutch kit?Raising the rpms doesn't make it completely go away. When you first start the truck on a cold morning, the noise will be there, the rpms of the engine are down because the engine oil is cold and the transmission oil is cold. You will notice after everything warms up, the idle will be higher and the noise will be less.
You will also notice the noise comes back as a short rattle sound when taking off from the stop or lugging the engine.
Many different scenarios as to why Ford spent the money for the DMF. NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) is a whole separate dept at Ford, so they were probably tasked with getting rid of the noise.
While I don't doubt the NVH division or anything, I have run my SMF conversion at 800-ish rpms for years and never get rollover. I also don't lug the engine.Raising the rpms doesn't make it completely go away. Without checking, I'd guess that at least you can get a clutch kit, but I don't know about the flywheels. When I worked on these for a living, we used to get some dual mass flywheels from a place called "Bishop Machine" as far as I can remember. It may be Bishop Automotive Machine Shop Service in Mableton, GA. They were sold as new, but I'm not convinced that they weren't rebuilt somehow instead. I really don't remember the entire name of the place or where they were out of. I do seem to recall that they were from down south someplace. But, can you go to a Ford dealership service department or a parts store and order a dual mass flywheel, or at least a clutch kit?
Yep I had to swap engines in by brother's Volvo S40 and put in a new clutch-- I was blown away that the stocker is a DMF! For a little 2.5l 5-cyl! Turns out they are more common than I thought...Some of the c4 corvettes used a dual mass flywheel also. Apparently it was technology that everyone used if they thought they needed it.
