Picked up an '86 f350 4x4 with the odo showing 89,000. Is there a way to identify the 6.9 over the 7.3? Any tell tale signs?

7.3 head bolts are different. I believe the 7.3 are 5/8ths 12 point and 6.9 are not or something like that.

If it hasn't been changed...the fuel filter head is different as well. The 7.3 has a fuel heater wire running into the top of the filter where the 6.9 does not.

Congrats on the new truck. Patiently waiting for pictures now!

you can always pull the heads off and measure the bore and stroke!
but once you find the correct size socket for the head bolts, you will know!
i have 1/2" 12 point ARP bolts on mine. 94 7.3L
with that low of miles, (provided it hasnt rolled over) your emmission tag on the valve cover should still be readable.

Could run a VIN decoder and see what it came with from the factory, assuming it has the original engine

Easiest way to tell which engine you have is to look on the flat spot on top of the block on the left side of the injection pump, it will say either 6.9 or 7.3 followed by a serial number, its usually covered in grime and takes a good scrubbing to get the numbers to show, as for oil capacity it either 10 or 11 quarts depending on which oil filter you use (powerstroke or IDI)

Engine vin 500,000 -1,116,000 is 7.3 idi at least to my knowledge. Also 8th diget of vin 1 = 6.9 M=7.3 K- 7.3 turbo I think that's right.

The flat place on the drivers side of the injection pump tells you if its a 6.9 or 7.3 right in the block serial numbers. Just clean off the dirt and see for sure. We try not to refer to right and left when we talk about locations. Instead we use the passenger or drivers side so nobody gets confused on sides. We try to make things easier for everyone.

Anyone know where the bolts on the block are to drain the coolant. I started to loosen what i thought was it but it looked like oil was seeping out so i tightened it back down.

One is located next to the oil filter. Other is next to the starter. Mine were brass. After I drained the old coolant I added Teflon tape to the threads and refilled with Final Charge. They were also in the same spot on my Dad's 6.9 when I did his coolant change.

You're lucky that you had brass...the early blocks had a different style plug that I'm not sure was meant to be removable...or, at the very least, hadn't been removed in a long time. It took an act of Congress to get mine out  I replaced the plugs with pet-*****, and I'd recommend doing the same...this makes coolant drains MUCH easier ;Sweet Just get a hose on the nipple, loosen the pet-****, and drain the coolant into a bucket...if the bucket's clean and the coolant's in good shape, you can even reuse the coolant.

easy way to determine 6.9 vs 7.3 is the head bolts. 6.9 will use a 7/16th 12 point to remove, 7.3 will use a 1/2in 12 point. you can see the outer headbolts just above the exhaust manifolds.
