VIN decoder tells you what engine the truck came with originally. But by definition, an '86 came with a 6.9. The OP is looking to find out what's in it now. Is the original EPA valve cover decal still there?

Left and right ALWAYS refer to the VEHICLE. Would you trust a doctor who told you you needed critical surgery on, say, your right "jewel", only to find out he meant _his_ right?....
And yes, you need SCA. The way the price of add-in SCA has shot up recently, FleetCharge is now usually a better deal.
