Picked up an '86 f350 4x4 with the odo showing 89,000. Is there a way to identify the 6.9 over the 7.3? Any tell tale signs?
I didnt know I could use the psd oil filter on the 6.9. I run the fl1995 on my 7.3 too.Easiest way to tell which engine you have is to look on the flat spot on top of the block on the left side of the injection pump, it will say either 6.9 or 7.3 followed by a serial number, its usually covered in grime and takes a good scrubbing to get the numbers to show, as for oil capacity it either 10 or 11 quarts depending on which oil filter you use (powerstroke or IDI)

You're lucky that you had brass...the early blocks had a different style plug that I'm not sure was meant to be removable...or, at the very least, hadn't been removed in a long time. It took an act of Congress to get mine out I replaced the plugs with pet-*****, and I'd recommend doing the same...this makes coolant drains MUCH easier Just get a hose on the nipple, loosen the pet-****, and drain the coolant into a bucket...if the bucket's clean and the coolant's in good shape, you can even reuse the coolant. One is located next to the oil filter. Other is next to the starter. Mine were brass. After I drained the old coolant I added Teflon tape to the threads and refilled with Final Charge. They were also in the same spot on my Dad's 6.9 when I did his coolant change.
