Getting rad support and headlights out...

Doing the final touches on removing my dead 7.3 from my '93 crew, and I thought I'd have a go at removing the rad support.

Well I spent about 2 hours working it over and I couldn't figure out how to get the frickin' headlights out, never mind the rad support. There's gotta be some fricking clips or sompin' I'm missing...arrrrgh. Anyway, I'm working with a broken arm in a cast, so I gave up(couldn't reach in behind the battery trays and such). Couldn't get the clutch fan undone, so I just removed the whole water pump complete with the fan on it. I got everything else completely undone, and even lifted the engine up about 3/4"(with my homeade hoist) just to see it move, and then decided to wait till I have a buddy to help for the final lift. If I can't get it up over the rad support, I'm just gonna take a hacksaw to the POS, and then worry about re-welding it into position later....(sigh)

Anyone pulled the headlights before? I've even got the '93 factory manual on CD(thanks Pete) and it's got pictures, but I still can't figure where I'm goin wrong...(sigh)

I have that same manual so my advice will be info you already know. I haven't had them out yet on mine but on vehicles that I have it usually isn't too hard so I am sure you are just missing something. Hope ya figure it out cause the hack job will turn into more trouble than its worth.

There are 2 nuts on the front of the core support that if'n memory serves correct are 10mm and 2 also on the back side that are behind the battery and are yes a PITA to get to.
The ones on the back side are studded into the plastic headlight bucket and 9 times out of 10, the whole stud will come out of its' retainer.
That should get ya out of there as there are only 4 fasteners to retain the entire headlight bucket assembly.

The motor will raise high enough to come over the rad support. The support does not have to come out unless you just want to take it out.

on the 93s the headlights come out with the plastic header panel.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'm heading back up there again this weekend hopefully to have that there block on a pallet, I'll try the things you mentioned.

Brian. Thanks for the offer of help. The truck is actually up in Chemainus at my sister's, so it's not always easy to drop and run. I thought about gettin' it down here on a trailer to work on, but I live in Oak bay, and the "stuffed shirt gestapo" would be here in a heartbeat if'n I had a derelict truck parked in front of my house...

On another note, I had a look at your 4x4 pics there in your album. Looked like a lot of fun to be had there...

What you do out in Sooke? I don't get out there much 'cept in the next couple months when the fishing season warms up...

The turn signals and corner marker light come out with the trim. There is a 7/16 nut in the corner of the trim near the level of the batt tray. and other one on the front. They are better felt than seen. After the trim is out there are 3 retaining clips that hold the headlight assembly in. Two on top and one on the outside corner. Look down in the square access holes where the adjustment screws go. Pull those clips and the headlights will come out. The clips are a PITA to remove. IF you're replacing the headlight assemblies with new ones. you can trim a the little plastic nubs off of the back of the headlight assemblies and turn the adjustment nuts a 1/2 turn and the headlights will come out. Hope that all made sense

While I like the look of the 92-96 front end, those headlights are a PITA to remove...
