Getting out the old GPC

I went to take out the old GPC from the 6.9 and it broke off in the block. Anyone else ever had this prblem? How did you get the rest of it out with the engine in the vehicle?

the glow plug controller screws down into the driver side head, dont it?? im pretty sure hes right cause ive heard of other people breakin it off then you usaully get a coolant leak

I've had it happen, not much fun to get to. knocked the center out of it, heated it a little and used a large easy out to remove.

I can't swear to it, but I'd almost bet the threads and whole bottom half are plastic.

This one is pot metal. I am going to try to thump on it today and hope I can get the levrage I need to get it out.

Well...anyone want to lend me a torch to see if I can melt it? I drilled it out to fit the easy out. Cranked on it so hard that it spun the easy out down and started grinding out the inside of the GPC. Had to back up and try again...and again...and again. I finally had the hole so large that the easy out only spins now. I chisel and hammer to try to chip it out piece by piece, no cigar. It only bunged up the remaining pot metal. I screwed up by taking a drill to it first so there is not a lot of metal left to thread. I think I am going to try to make it just a tad larger and just seal it up until I can take the heads off this spring. That is, unless someone has any other ideas.

Sorry to hear your having so much difficulty. Did you use penetrating oil first? There is a tool called a internal pipe wrench. www.generaltools.com/Departments/Plumbing-Tools/Internal-Pipe-Wrenches.aspx see if you can find one to fit.

I had the same problem and relocated the controller to another water port forward on the same head. I used standard plumbing fittings to make it work, and extended the harness. Then I went to a manual system, and forgot about the GPC. I stopped trying to remove it before I broke the body.

Oh no...I have upgraded to the 7.3 system (although I purchased a junk one from vato zone and am on the second on that does not work). I was pullin the GPC out to stick in the manual temp sensor. Now that I have come to this point, I can not even finish what I was working on (puttin the body back together to DRIVE ON THE ROAD). And THANK YOU JACK for that thread. I have been trying to think of something like that in my head to remove it. I thought of an anchor style system that you tighten down and it anchors in. Then you grab the body and trun counterclockwise. The problem with what I wanted to do was it seemd as if I would have a single use product.

Anything internal just swages it in there. If you already have a hole thru it take a hacksaw blade and make several cuts in it then chip the pieces out with a VERY sharp tiny wood or metal chisel. This is my proven method of removal, nothing, and I mean nothing else works as well.
