FYI Info on the Brown Truck's Engine. Funny and not at the same time

Just an FYI, 7.3 head gaskets will work in a 6.9 apparently... But not for long. I've determined by means of comparing the leftover head gasket from the set I purchased last winter for my 6.9 to a 7.3 set my dad bought for his motor build, that the "6.9L Head Gasket Set" was in fact a 7.3 gasket set. It was boxed wrong at FelPro. Yea. I couldn't help but laugh a little. So I'll venture a guess that possibly THAT caused the head gasket to fail with only a couple thousand miles on it. And just for sake, yes, a 7.3 gasket will make a 6.9 run but not for long.

That really sucks bigtime..... But I guess we are spoiled thinking that everything we buy is exactlly what we want just because the name or size tells us what we want to see... I'm wondering how many other builders found this problem with their mismarked packaging too... Maybe a little class action....

Kinda thought it was funny your engine blew a gasket at 14 psi, mine with stock bolts holds 20psi

Well let us know if your head gaskets go, if they are 7.3 gaskets instead of 6.9 gaskets. Thats the same place I got mine from.

That sucks big time, but at least you have some answers as to why it failed so quickly. For what it's worth, I doubt most professional engine builders would have caught that type of mistake either.

The biggest difference is that the fire rings between the two are completely different, the 7.3's fire ring would run very close to what would be the 6.9's water jacket passages.

How did you find the difference? Are they marked differently? I want to check a blown one that I saved but need to know what to look for since I don't have another gasket to compare it to.

I have both 6.9's and 7.3's here so I have parts for both laying around.
If you don't know the story behind my brown truck the first time around, I had only had the engine together for about 75 miles and a valve locked up because of shotty machine work. So I pulled the head and when I did that I bought a head gasket set to reinstall it, leaving me with one left over. Then its last demise was when I finished my exhaust install and took it for a drive, it had been showing some signs of something odd going on with the engine but what is there to do except drive it till it fails. So I took it for a drive after the exhaust install and didn't get a mile from my house and KABOOOM CLANK CLANK CLANK CLANK CLANK... White smoke rolling out the back and antifreeze all the way down the drivers side of the truck like drool down the side of a dog that has been chasing a cat and my temp gauge rising quickly.
So, then a week or so ago my dad was working on building his 7.3 and needed another head gasket, so he grabbed my extra one and compared it with his 7.3 gasket and it was the same. So with that I'd say its a fair conclusion to say the head gasket set I bought was not correct for a 6.9, it was in fact a 7.3 head gasket set.
