fuel system w/ frame rail mounted filters.

whats up folks!
little bit of brainstorming going on here..
tomorrow im making battery boxes on the rear frame rail.
also going to mount my filters and fuel pump in the same area with access panel in the bed.

ive always left a filter in the engine compartment.

this time, im thinking of a fuel block.
fuel in. fuel out, and a spot for a Schrader.

how well does the air actually escape with a system like this?

At work I have been adding these sweet Hydracheck valves to our lube oil systems for venting and sampling upstream of our regulators.

We use Hydac filter heads now (Behringer bought FGC who bought Mahle and their customer service is nil) and the new heads have a vent plug on each with a retaining plug. I know its not helpful as this is oil stuff, but there has to be some equivalent components compatible with diesel.

I have something similar on my 87..

however, they are all ontop of filters, where air can actually accumulate.

filters will be low, and the fuel block on either the firewall or the fender, im unsure. but it will be the highest position.
i guess air is air, itll force its own way out

So long as you can maintain an airtight system then it should be easy to get air out at a high vent. Check valves help too

i have a set up similar to your picture on my truck, and no vent or anything higher on the engine. once the line leaves the last filter it goes straight to the IP. with the electric pump working properly even with the lines drained all the way to the tank it will start up quickly. Crack one injection line, crank starter for 20-30 seconds, gets a little fuel coming out. tighten injection line down and it will usually catch and start up on the next crank.

What “piping” are you using to get the fuel from the pumps to the engine? AN stuff I assume. If air is a problem, what if you put in a nice machined al-u-min-e-um block with a T machined in it. Put the “foot” of the t point up, with the fuel flow through the cross of the t. That way fuel would flow straight through, and air could go out the top, through a Schrader or something like Scotty uses. Plus the nice machined block would look skookum under the hood/on the firewall. I’m sure you know someone that could machine something like that........

actually know a few people! lol
atlas.. I don't have any CNC equipment that can bang this out.
I was goint to buy some end mills and do it on my bridge port, but for that price I can get someone to cut it out a lot cleaner.

my #1 choice is still on lock down and cant do it at this time.

but I found another guy whos fairly cheap...

gonna have these blocks machined into a IH logo.

I like to have a small orfice from the top of the secondary filter vented back to tank. Take a look at the factory filter head. Airdog and Fass do this as well. Continuous air removal.

ive been running AN lines for about 5 yrs.
they seal very well, and zero air intrusion.
trying to keep it simple, and keep things out of the engine compartment that clutters things up.
initial start up and when my dumb **** runs out of fuel is the only time I need it.

hell I think ive extracted fuel for fires out of my filterheads more than ive evac'd air

Mount the axle (edit oops, yea) and crawl underneath.... My bet is in front of the xmember.
If yer putting a hatch in the floor then a (future) bed box is out unless they are back away from the cab...

Orifice idea is the ****, almost every industrial diesel does this, it works. There is afancy valve in your box o stuff coming, maybe it can work.

typ4 care to elaborate? I’m working on a set up right now that will be running 60 psi through a Cat equivalent fuel filter 2 micron. Either 1R-0750 or 1R-0751. Similar to Airdog or Fass. Is it just an orficed return from the filter head and an extension tube for the center of the filter to keep air at the top or is there more to it? What size return orfice?
