Fuel additives?

I've noticed that a lot of guys are using fuel additives to make up for the lack of lubricant's in the diesel we buy at the pump. My question is two fold.
Question 1 - What's the most economical additive to use. By economical, I don't mean cheap and worthless. I mean useful and then inexpensive.

Question 2 - I've heard a lot of guys tell me that I can burn almost anything in my 7.3L IDI. From kerosene to used motor oil and SVO. Can I take my used motor oil, run it through a filter, and use that as a fuel additive? I don't really care to try to burn used motor oil as a source of fuel, but I figured if I'm going to have to bottle it all back up and take it down to be recycled, why not just pour it into a 5 micron sock filter and make some use out of it?

supertech brand 2cycle oil. Add one ounce per gallon.

Somewhere there is a chart that shows which lubricitity additive was the best. Wish I could put my finger on it for you right now, but I don't have it. Generally speaking, there is no good cheap additive.

Here is a url to the best chart I have found. Not only does it explain what is 'best', but the methods used to support the conclusion and the results. Quick 'n dirty answer, for my truck is TC-W3 [#7 on the list], outboard 2 cycle oil. I buy by the gallon at Wally-World.

I would recommend only using a product that was specifically designed to be used as a lubricant in diesel fuel. Staynadyne would be my first choice but it is not easy to find around here. I typically use a double dose of Power Service with each fill up.

Staynadyne is only slightly worse on our IP than TC-W3 on the above chart. Probably would never notice the difference unless in a lab.
