My 88 didn't have a shroud since I ripped it off like 5 years ago when I first got it.
I did keep the top 4 inches of the shroud just to keep fingers out of the blades... got whacked in the finger while messing around at idle and man did it HURT for a bit.
(it didn't bruise or anything, just hurt for a bit)
Never had any issues with cooling, generally speaking.
I've had to back off a couple of times when the temps hit 220F(which I probably could have gone further), but those were when hauling a heavy load up a long grade in the middle of summer(so 90+F outside).
That was also at 250 RWHP, so basically double the amount of heat going through the engine as stock...
My '93 has a shroud, but that's more because I haven't needed the clearance yet.
So, my answer to the OP is:
Remove it if you want.
If you start running into issues, put it back in some form or another.
