You might try clasic diesel designs on fb, they chime in all the time and will give you the right info.

Engine running at idle in the morning I see about 5. Holds up well early in the day and runs about 3 under acceleration or loaded up a hill. Later in the day it looses pressure, I have not figured out why yet. Screen on pump shows no dirt, new filter just after the pump, and the original filter in the normal location. That is due to be replaced soon.

To test that, I need to remove the return line running from the filter head that tee's into the injector return lines, correct?

What is the amount I'm looking for? Something like a quart of fuel in 30 seconds or something like that? Engine running, I assume?
pinch it off, bet pressures act normally.

How much fuel is going out the return on the filter head?.....
So I removed the line that runs from the filter head return to the first injector return fitting and capped it. Ran another hose from the filter head return into a bottle and cranked it. At idle, it'll return fuel for a few seconds, and as pressure drops to zero, there is no more fuel coming out of the filter head return.

Small update- I capped the return line off the filter head, and the corresponding port at the injector. The pump builds about 12psi now with the key on (only made 8psi before) and pressure seems to drop much slower. It'll actually hover around 3-4ish psi for about 5 seconds before it drops to zero.

sounds to me like a bad pump if it just drops to zero while idling. or maybe you have a blockage in your line somewhere. I had shower head pieces blocking my pickups in the tank.

Lots of people are running Holley blue pumps, and Reds. And there are some real good walbro pumps too. they are all going to cost more than the facet. most of them require a regulator but most of them you can just dead head the regulator and you dont need a separate return for it. There are lots of threads discussing the differences between the pumps.

I just made the pinch off change to mine this morning. I saw 8+ at idle and 5 under a heavy load. Have not run it thru a day yet to see if it tails off. Will report back when I do.

I also thought it might be pieces of the pickup plugging the fuel line. I cut a hole in the floor and accessed the fuel pickup and sending unit but have not pulled it out. I am sure it is original, 33 years old. I had decided that you cant push pressure if you cant pick it up. Pressure will build with no flow(idle) and drop when flow is needed. However, I installed the electric pump with its clear bowl and screen before going crazy and did not see even the slightest bit of debris trapped in the screen. After pinching off the return line on the filter head I will drive it for awhile before deciding about pulling the pick up.

Drove it for a couple of days and it is improved. Much higher pressure when cold. Still drops in the afternoon but not to zero. Still thinking it might be picking debris as the day goes on and reduces the flow. Pulling the pick up next.
