Electric vs mechanical has a lot to do with cooling system health.
That's why there's so much "debate" about it. It can work very well, if you do it right.

I have a brand new radiator, water pump, motorcraft theromostat, hoses, inspected block ports with bore scope. I say my cooling health is at 100%. With 4 12 inch electric fans and 100% sealed aluminum shroud (way more than stock) there was no comparison to the clutch fan. I drove electric fans for 7,000 miles with no real issues but when it started getting 95-98 here i saw coolant temps hitting 220f. I do have factory AC and a water intercooler blocking my radiator, but i also have a 2" function cowl hood to cool engine temps. There is just no comparison with electric to mechanical in my experience switching between the two.

On the topic of getting a 450, just look for an F350 cab and Chasis. I could be wrong, but i just picked up a 1996 F350, single cab 4x4 with a powerstroke that has a GVWR of 11,000lb. It's frame is over an inch thicker than my 1993 F350 crew cab long bed 2wd 10,000lb gvwr. There is also an extra 1/4" plate at the top and bottom of the frame reinforcing it. I'd feel much safer towind 20k with a cab and chasis than my 93 f350 though it wouldnt be as smooth of a ride.

i took measurements at the transmission crossmember, and the front of the rear spring perches.

I forgot to add 1993 crew cab long bed is 8900lbs with all of the tools and liftgate so 1100lb max tongue weight, 96 single cab is 7100 so 3900lb max tongue weight, more like an 18 wheeler in terms of trailer weight distribution.

Not saying you're wrong, because individual experiences will vary.
I've just seen multiple 7.3 powerstrokes that tow heavy with efans and it works well for them.
I'm sure the idi runs a tad hotter though.
Depends on the fans also.
Too many variables to say why it will or why won't work for any certain person.

I just pulled out my 4 electric fan setup because of coolant Temps getting to 220f with ac on. Installed a good clutch fan thst locks around 200f and I've not seen my truck ever go over 200f since then.

Yet another electric fan convert /ing back to mech( hmmmm)
I'd love to see more than 1?( fordf250hdxlt?) who have had towing hot/heavy work with electric fans.

I also have ac and a water intercooler blocking my radiator. I have a real gauge that I saw 220f factory gauge wasnt but 1/4 up

i have my clutch fan squarely in place. But in my struggles to keep my converted R134 AC system happy, I do have pusher electric fans mounted in front of the condenser to keep the pressure spikes manageable when idling in traffic. Otherwise, my AC system will blow it's safeties. I don't have a problem with towing heavy and run a Spearco air/air IC in front of a old skool CBR.

I have a new compressor and r134 cut on switch but still r12 condenser until I swap new engine and radiator core in. At idle mines not great but cruising I have no issues at 98f in a black crew cab keeping things cool inside. What are your high and low freon pressures? Maybe your orifice is plugged and compressor is putting out too much. 250psi I'd say is max on high side, 50psi on low max. You need an r134 low switch so it'll kick on at around 30psi. R12 doesn't kick on until 40psi I think.

a buddy of mime is the "mad scientist" on AC systems. I leave the entire mess up to him. it's not a problem below 95* outside. above 110* in AZ and NM, and Barstow, CA is where I blow my safeties in traffic. The system has been properly flushed, and there is no shrapnel collecting on the orifice.

what's wrong with that? you had perfect temps.the t-stat isn't even fully open until over 210F so you were running just 10F over fully open t-stat temp with your A/C on in nearly 100F temps! you had it made!
so now your running the power and fuel hungry mechanical just so you can keep your t-stat fluttering.

240F or under is safe = all day long.

your definition of "better" is different from mine.my "better" = more power to the wheels while using less fuel.you had "better"! :D
your thinking of "cooler = better" is wrong.that's not better, that's less efficient.;)

My intake Temps post ic were pushing 170f they stay right around 130-140f running the ac now. I've found 110 to 120f post ic Temps yielded the best fuel mileage. I'm sure the clutch fan is robbing mileage, I'll let you know next fill up but more importantly ac is working great. Not that I'm a wimp, but while traveling I have to take phone calls and 200 miles a day rolling windows up to hear and sweating just isn't cutting it

the reason the 4 electric fans where not working that good is because you put the plate right up against the radiator blocking off all air flow to all areas except where the fans where. If you look at how most electric fan setups work they have about an inch gap so the fans can pull air from the entire radiator.

110F is crazy! It reminds me of Bobby from King of the Hill.

Putting the plate right up against the radiator ensures there 100% flow through the cores though, i suppose i could build it back further, there was about 1/2" from the radiator to the actual core and fins. There was just no comparison in my case. I saw a drop of almost 20F from turbo inlet temperatures too.

I guess it works for some people, in my case the clutch fan works better to keep my AC working and my IC operating efficiently.

Also if there's room, some of the flaps that will open say when you're driving and the fans aren't on can help for flow.
Probably bad way of describing it. Lol
