ok as most know i have posted on here that i seemed to have really really low egts but lots of black smoke, well the other day i painted my engine ford blue i wanted to paint it before i put the turbo on, and i also sprayed some paint on the manifolds well i havent put probly 100 miles on it since i painted it, but i did get out on our road and smoke some tires and wind her out a few time in first and second and brought the egt gauge up a little past 350 degrees which i have figured is wrong only thing is the paint still hasnt burnt off of the manifolds yet and it been painted for 3 or 4 days and drove it every day since then, and its only 500 degrees engine paint?? so is my exaust temp really this low?

Lots of smoke means the engine must be getting fuel therefore the egt's will be higher. Even with a turbo if You really get in it and the pump supplies enough fuel the egt's will be more than 350f. Hard to say if You are not towing something but I think something is wrong with Your pyro probe. Is it before or after the turbo? This makes a difference too. I would install it right on the exhaust manifold or right after it on the down pipe to get I more accurate reading.

How hard is it to drill out the manifolds to accept the probe? With it being cast and all.

It's pretty easy to drill, as long as you have a sharp bit. Every time I've done it, i'll dip the bit in some real tacky grease and drill real slow, that keep the amount of shaving in the manifold to a minimum. do the same thing when you tap it out. I've always had good luck this way

It drilled out much easier than I thought! I drilled my hole between the 3rd or 4th cylinder back on the driver's side. I used some wheel bearing grease on the bit and also drilled into the bottom side of the manifold from under the truck so that metal cuttings would fall away from the manifold and not into it. ;Sweet

You could get a mini-thermometer that is digital and uses a "laser" to take a temp reading. You can get them at Harbor Freight for about $20. The max reading for them is about 600-700 degrees, so if it reads out "MAX" or "---", then you know the temp is over that. Just point it at the manifolds and see what it says.

Just be careful when drilling, when I done my 04 F250 I used a harbor freight cheapo bit, it took a little bit to drill but I went easy at it. When I did my older truck I used a sharp pilot drill type drill bit, thinking it would save time and drill better, the only problem was when I was drilling the stinking dril bit caught right before it broke through and snapped off and fell down in manifold. I had to remove all the piping to get it out because I didn't want to send a chunk of drill bit through the exhaust wheel of the turbo. That shouldn't be a problem on a non-turbo, you could just rev the engine and possibly blow it out.

Thing to remember guys is that it'll take some extended time at 500+ degrees to heat up that exhaust manifold...lots of material there to heat up.

http://www.harborfreight.com/

I have a store in town so can just go pick stuff up...if you have one in your town make sure you print out the price online. Most times the store price is higher but they always match what the website has.

Mike

there is no such store in the town that i live in lol we dont even have a red lightLOL i live in a very small town so i will have to buy one off the internet if i buy one, but i might just buy a hole new gauge and thermocouple and every thing
