this is something that just started to happen. my tack goes to zero and the tranny goes crazy, the torque converter locks and unlocks and it shifts erratically. I thought I saw a thread about this but I couldn't find it. 1991 e4od. any info would be great, thanks.

Mine is doing the same thing. Actually, my OD 'off' light will start to flash. Tach sensor is gone; shell out another $100! P/n E5TZ-17B384-A

Sensor is on top of the IP gear cover.

As stated above it sounds like you need a new tach sensor. The e4od needs a working tach sensor to function properly.

I forgot to mention the tack sensor is brand new, only a few months old and it is a motorcraft. I replaced the TPS sensor 30,000 miles ago. the OD light glows very dim. this happens intermittingly.

After i gone thru my E4OD top to bottom front to back early this year it drove like a dream , One morning my O/D started flashing and my RPM's were acting up and did not let go to the point were it was going to effect my Tranny so i ordered NOS tech sensor . Problem fixed no bouncy tach or O/D flashing .

But if you tach sensor working correctly , you need to check the connection the harness connect to the pass side of the Tranny and make sure it's secure , Some times loose connect , dirty , cut wire will cause all what you going thru

Dim OD light means blown fuse, check your fuses

I just checked the fuses and none of them are blown. the connector on the tranny is a little dirty but there is no corrosion or bare wires. there appeared to be dielectric Greece on the pin connectors.

My next thing on the list would be checking for codes

Could be the TECA relay in the under the hood by the master cylinder is going bad. Dim light normally means the TECA is not getting power, or worse is dead. The TECA is in the drivers kick panel, and is installed from the hood side of the firewall. It is the large connector up against the inner fender. Make sure the connector there is good and clean. Make sure no water leaks getting the TECA wet..........

I replaced the TECA rely a few years ago but it could have gone bad. the connection at the TECA in the kick panel was good and clean. what's the best way to check for codes and where can I get a TECA?

Any OBD1 reader should work, and they are cheap. There are other methods in the Tech articles as well.

TECAs... hmm... ebay? Put up a WTB thread in the marketplace as well. I have one available, but it's coming from a parts truck that I have zero history on.

you've got an intermittent power issue more than likely.i didn't know the pre-92's had a dim od light when this happens too.that's cool.
check all the fuses and the relay.since it's intermittent (no tach reading/dim od light) you'll probably find a fuse and or relay pins are corroded.so focus more on the plugs for the fuses and relay more than anything and you'll probably find the issue easily.

I'm not sure if its a coincidence but I unplugged the TECA to check the connection and plugged it back in and it has been shifting normally so far. I will fuss around with some of the connections if it happens again.

with it out, spray it (not so much the pins on the relay, though that wont hurt, but down in the pins where it plugs into) with electrical cleaner and it should stop acting up for ya.
