Guys,
Does anyone know what years are plug n play for this trans? I finally found one that from a 93 7.3 4x4 and want to make sure it will fit before shelling out more cash.

Also what years will work for a 90 7.3 4x4?

Here's a closely related question: can a 2wd e4od be changed to a 4wd model by taking the tailpiece off the 4wd transmission and putting it on the 2wd transmission?

Yes and yes, any e40d will work on a 7.3. The psd units received internal updates and had better planatary gear sets, you will just have to install tour original solenoid pack in place of the psd solenoid pack. 2wd trans can be converted but it’s a lot less work to find a 4x4 trans

Do the newer ones still have the gear inside to drive the speedo cable? I know they have the hole blocked off but I was under the impression the gear was not there.

Thanks for the reply, Thewespaul. I have a 2wd parts truck and a 4wd driver, so it's good to know that it's not hopeless.

1992 is the changeover year for the fully electronic speedometer. But if you keep the older transfer case, you're good to go with a cable driven speedo.

It's almost hopeless, he didn't elaborate in his answer. Yes, the 2wd trans can be converted to a 4x4 trans, but you have to tear the 2wd trans completely down starting from the front and working your way to the rear. The rear shaft as well as the rear tail piece needs to be swapped, and the only way to do it is to tear it completely down. If you are doing a rebuild, then it doesn't matter too much, but you do need the 4x4 pieces to make it work.

I have bought several reman E4ODs. One came with no gear on the output shaft and had to be sent back. You need to look in the hole.
