I'll be putting my truck on the dyno this coming sunday. I have already turned my pump up 2 flats and a friend who also has a turbo'd 93 IDI is gonna help me bump the timing and adjust the wastegate. I'm supposed to get 3 pulls, is there anything simple or quick I can do to the truck between pulls to affect the outcome? I sure everyone else will be able to flip a switch, turn a knob, or load a different tune. It sounds like my pulls will be mostly for checking consistency. Just thought I would ask though. Any other pointers would be helpful as this is also my first dyno event.

Good luck I hope you don't break anything. I want to dyno so bad but I don't want to blow a head gasket or something. Be careful about that timing in fact I would leave it alone unless you have a pulse or luminosity meter to quantify what you are doing. I hate to throw cold water at it, maybe I'm being overly cautious.

Well if you know exactly what your timing is set to, you could always put a switch on your cold advance solenoid, and try a run with it on, and one with it off. Set your timing in such a way as to either advance or retard at your descretion.

Please ask what dyno is being used and what particular unit of measure they are using to give the HP (i.e. SAE, STP, or dynojet HP). The rally dyno day at TS Performance was done on their SuperFlow dyno and we used the SAE HP (the lowest, but most accurate) which is the industry standard.

You can also unplug the wastegate hose and put a bolt in the end to disable it during one of the pulls to see what your max boost is and if you gain HP or lose HP. I lost 6 HP when I gained 3+ psi (from 12 to 15+) when going to the moose injectors. Likely secondary to superheating the intake charge.

How would I go about wiring the cold advance solenoid? I notice the throttle is a lot more responsive before it kicks off.

Just run power to it straight from the batter then? Would there be a problem with running it that way all the time? I'm also looking for a local shop right now to see about getting my timing adjusted. After reading some other posts, 9.7 seems to be the popular setting.

I got my wastegate adjusted to let me push 9psi and I have a wire handy to rig the cold advance solenoid(pending results from another post). I'll see what this thing can do tomorrow.

Huff rigged his up to be on all the time, with a switch on his dash to turn it off. He set the timing to be correct with it on, then flipped the switch to retard timing when his boost got real high and the propane was coming on. This helped decrease cylinder presures for him a little bit.

Unfortunately the cold advance totally slipped my mind when crunch time came. That was one thing I didn't care for at this dyno place, the guy running it was more interested in working with the big number guys. Me and the other IDI guy, it was like get your runs and get out. Being my first time with this sort of thing I just kept my mouth shut and did what I was told. Anyway, here's some pics and my results. A little lower than what I was hoping for, but decent none the less. Peak HP was 173, torque was 335. This dyno couldn't put a good load on the truck either only hit 6psi when I can do 9psi on the street.

those numbers are pretty good, and why not up your boost a little bit? 9 psi sounds kinda low for a 7.3

I'm almost out of adjustment on the actuator rod and it's really hard to reattach as it is. I had to use a wrench to help fight the spring to pull the rod out far enough to hook on the lever.

Edit; For comparison purposes, my friend ran his 1993 turbo IDI/5spd with his pump all the way up, timing advanced slightly, open element filter, and 3" down pipe...he has no exhaust on the truck after the DP. His truck also has 100k more miles than mine.

My numbers: 173HP/335TQ
His numbers: 150HP/373TQ

I have the wastegate unhooked. Stock rebuilt pump and its maxed out and i can only make 11 psi full throttle and max out at 1000 egt.

I wonder why your friend's truck was so much lower in HP and slightly higher in tq? What turbo system does he have? Something must not be right with his. With yours I'd say that was pretty good. Using the standard 30% power loss through the drive line and the standard stock IDI 7.3 HP for a N/A is 185, factory turbo is 195 at the wheel, you'd be around 225 at the wheel, that's +30 from factory turbo or +40 from a stock NA 7.3. Not bad. I'd be real happy with those #s based on that and what was coming from most of the trucks at the really.
