Does anyone know how the oil is routed through the filters on a head such as this ?? :

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PRM-1221/?rtype=10

My reasoning is that one could use a normal filter on one side and a much finer "bypass" filter on the other side; the normal filter would function as usual, while the much finer filter would slowly super-clean the oil.

Am I right ??

Thanks.

to get the carbon particles,,out of diesel crankcase oil..it has to be 1 micron absolute..and as far as i know..only amsoil has it..i have one,,and the threads for it,,are a odd thread..you cant guess why,,right??? ive not put it on yet..you have to put,,a .90 restriction in the outler side of that filter base,,so the oil flows thru very slowly,,so the filter will stop the very small particles...

Heck! That would make a great dual fuel filter mount as well.

The question is, it doesn't appear to be a bypass style ability like you want it. It doesn't appear to be a parallel set up, but in series only. This means if you install the 1u filter, it will restrict the flow of everything, unless the 1u filter is a bypass filter, but then again, what's the bypass pressure set at?

Seems to me you need a parallel system so you get full flow out of the main filter, then fine filtration out of the second one. Even if you use the factory filter and plumb an oil line off another port, don't you think a single canister would work just as well?

It just seems a little large to me, somewhat impractical, although a good line of thinking.

Am I being cookoo or overly cautious?

I think you're right, unless there's an internal bypass in the filter head that will allow the majority of the oil to skip the bypass filter, which there may well be but I didn't see any reference to that in the description. That could be great for a dual bypass oil filter setup run parallel to the factory oil filter, or would be great for remote-mount dual full-flow oil or fuel (or maybe even coolant) filters, but I don't think that that filter head's really going to work with a full-flow and a bypass flow filter together.

It does make for some good ideas, if space could be found under the hood...

The brand name is "PERMA-COOL".... can't help but think its intended purpose if for coolant filtration....full flow in series no problem. Use one for DCA cans, the other for less expensive straight filtration.... in front of the DCA can.

It would work good for dual fuel filters, watersorb/blocker filter first, then particulate filter after.

Although, when looking at the filter housing, the innie/outtie arrows are on the same tubes. Maybe the mounts are isolated, but just look like they connect as a single pipe???? I can't tell without seeing the canister mount side....or thru the pipes.

If you get one, could you let us know how it's functioning/set up to flow?

No matter how it's rigged up, as two separate systems or as a dual filter series, either way consolidates additional filtration to one locality for ease of service. I can see plenty of options either way. It seems to be fairly priced too!
