Started my new job today, as a diesel engine machinst. its what i wanna do, what i went to school for and it pays good for the area

also, since its a service shop i can get parts at cost and they have a chassis dyno good to 1200 hp so ol smokie may get a few runs after the goodies are installed later this yr.

now my question, is it possible to dyno tune an ol IDI on a dyno?

Theoretically, if you can put the air and fuel to it and keep it cool these things will run and run and run. I've yet to see one run over 400hp and last long though.

last is the key word. unfortantly, im skeptic...she has 137,--- and will probaly hit 150,000 by the time the mods are done but that is gunna be HARD miles.

if i can get some head studs ill feel better.

I dont really think you can dyno tune an IDI. I mean all you can really do is adjust the pump for more fuel, and maybe adjust the wastegate on a wastegated turbo, but other than that you really cant adjust any more parameters on these engines. Unless our pumps have a little allen screw that adjusts the fuel preasure, then maybe you could screw around on the dyno messing with that, but I dont think I've ever read of our pumps having one of those.

What exactly do you mean by "dyno tune"?

tweak the pump setting until optimal performance is attainted. like tuning a carb on a gas-o-line engine only instead of tuning the carb, tune the pump.

or how they use it to tune the computer controlled freaks.

I don't see why not...as long as your new bosses don't mind you playing with their stuff on your own time. It will take a lot of it to get that fuel just right.

Go for it.

Get a base line where it's at now and go from there testing each mod as you go so you know if you're headed in the direction you want to go and know what doesn't work.

im willing to pay for it...just a chance to use it will be worth it.

Yeah, I know you can turn up the fuel on these things, I watched Russ do it on mine. I was talking about increasing fuel preasure, not amount. I was saying that I dont think these pump have an adjustment for the fuel preasure (Dont know if that would effect performance, but I would think more preasure would be better for power).

only way to pressurize these pumps more is by adding an over pressurized electric pump. Which I dont recommend doing because it can ruin the pump.
