DMF play

For my truck, how much rotational play (in inches or a fraction there of) is permitted? In other words, if there is more than ____ of an inch, the DMF should be replaced.

Well...5/8" to 3/4" about the limit.......there are some pics of mine that shelled and cracked the bell hsg area---ZF's are solid casting = case and bell area are one.

did you have any warning before it let go?

Mine is getting noisy, it's getting close to 150k, on the original clutch as far as I know.

noisy DMF's are often due to uneven firing pulses.
check your injection pump/ injectors first!!!!!!

Yea...I missed the fact he has a PSD! Good catch Calvin

Bad inj harness can cause uneven pulse firing.........

My DMF is quiet as I run down the road and at a idle. When I shut the engine off I think the noise I hear must be the DMF. It sounds like just before it completely stops turning, someone has thrown a hard stop on the engine. It sounds like those springs in the DMF are being compressed. It has sounded like this on shutdown from when I got it at 130,000 to today at 230,000.

So they only indication that I need to deal with my DMF is that there is 7/8" rotational play.

My injectors are fairly new from Bean, and all my wiring is fine - she runs like a scalded ape, the only issue is some noise at idle and shut off....

Well...if it sounds like a washing machine on spin with an out of balance load.....then I would start planning a replacement soon!
