Got some differential fluid starting to leak out by the front wheel. Going to replace the axle shaft seals. While I’m in there, is there anything else I should replace or tend to? Was thinking of doing the wheel bearings just because.

I replaced mine recently. I only replaced the hub seals when I had them off. I inspected the bearings and everything was fine so I reused them. Good luck getting the diff out, don't lose any shims.

I would do a visual on the bearings (not blindly replace), re-pack inner bearing if changing hub seals.

Spindles can be seized into the knuckles. Probably the biggest obstacle (it was for me). Check the seal and caged roller at the stub/spindle interface. Replace if shot or poor condition.

Shims are captured behind the carrier bearings on a D60 - shouldn't fall out.

Definitely a good time to check over the ujoints and brakes really well.

when you are there, the axle will be mostly empty, ( pinion gear will be there ) but the ring gear and both axles will be out ( have to do this to replace axle seals) i run a rag and shop air to clean out dirt from the axle tubes, this might take some time to get them clean if you hit the mud like i did,
it will help when reinstalling the axles ,, as not to push dirt into the center and destroy your gears and bearings..
i learn by my mistakes,,, i will clean all axle tubes when i do this job!

Research using the superduty axle seals, in place of the old style seal.

I used them in my 79 ford d60 and my 89, as well as several others with no issues.

Oh, ok... I see now they are used on the stub axle (not axle tube) when put on other diffs

I picked this style of tube seal for when I rebuild my front axle.
