I did it now. I had a bad leak on the right real axle seal. It was the inner one on the hub. Upon disassembly, I removed what I describe as a sleeve on the axle housing. This is the part that the rear inner hub seal rides on, not the housing itself. This sleeve is pressed on the axle housing almost to the backing plate. I started tonight looking for the sleeve online, but have not had any luck. Before I call the Ford dealer tomorrow can anyone give me information on what this is actually called? Thank you for any help with this. After a bit of cooling off from the initial panic, I have come come across this from Franklin2: When you go back to the store, ask for seal # 370047A. You will be shocked how much you pay for this seal, but it will solve all your problems. It's actually a seal in a seal. You RTV it onto your old seal surface, it has it's own seal surface inside that spins. This gets rid of problems with leaking oil seals on these rearends. Is this what I need? Thanks..

I think that is part of the original seal, and is supposed to be removed before the new seal can be installed. What Franklin2 is describing is a scottseal, which is what National part #370047A is. You should be able to remove that sleeve and install the new seal and be good to go.

Thank you! I will pick up a 370047A and re-assemble! BTW, what oil goes in the rear differential? I probaby should make a mess dripping some on the bearings rather than assembling dry. *edit* Oh boy. NAPA has the proper socket to tighten the axle nut to spec. It's $25, so I bought in the hopes I will never have to do this again because I have the tool! Does anyone know what the torque spec is for this axle bearing?
