Damaged compressor housing

I just bought a factory turbo from a yard up north. Dude sent me pictures and everything looked great. I get the boxes, open 'em up, its all cleeeaaan, AND well packed. I am happy. Then I see this. Followed by a steady stream of profanities. Its has a crack, with a nice little chip and its too out of round to fit inside the o-ring inside the intake hat. Thats the crack on the front in the last picture, the backside is a casting flaw.
Since its Saturday I won't be able to get in touch with the guy til Monday, though I have sent him these pics. It was not damaged in the pics he sent me, and he packed the hell out of it with each piece bubble wrapped. The box wasn't banged up either.
I am venting. I doubt he's gonna do much of anything about it, though I will find out for sure, and I would rather keep it and make it work, so I am going to take it to a machine shop and see what they can do or try to find another compressor housing. Does anybody have a core turbo or housing they want to part with for cheap? Its the Garrett, T3 I believe.
Though its cold, its the first weekend in the past 5 that it hasn't rained so I thought I could get something productive done. Arghhhh.

SAVE ALL OF THE PACKAGING!!!!!!

I've seen stuff arrive many times where the packaging looked good when it arrived but found big problems afterwards from being drop kicked along the way.

If it was shipped UPS, FEDEX or DHL it has at least $100 worth of insurance. You need to file a damage claim with the carrier.

Easy to do but takes a few weeks to get your money but it does work. I'm familiar with UPS claims so if you need help or advice on it shoot me a PM, I'm on this site all the time so I can get back to you quickly.

He will definatly need to know if you file a claim....To go a little deeper into it

1. save ALL packaging
2. contact the shipping company immediatly and file the claim most can take a claim 24 hrs a day 7 days a week
3. contact the shipper to inform them of the claim and possibly work something out for a replacement part (some will do this without hesitation even though the claim hasn't gone through yet)
4. the shipping company may need to inspect it and will process the claim, you need to let them know if you plan to keep and repair it or if it is a total lose in which hey will only pay up to the insured value of the package.....(if you insured a $500 turbo for only $100 you will only get $100 for it)
5. If the claim is in your favor (Most are) the shipper will get the check and you will need to get the refund or replacement part from them

That's basicly how it works...pretty simple, once you get the ball rolling on a claim the shiping companies will be able to answer questions for you but I'll be glad to help as needed to try to point you in the right direction.

Yep, it blows. I am waiting to hear back from yard-dude, probably Monday. Who files the claim, the shipper or the recipient? I have little hope that he, being a junkyard dog, went out of his way to purchase any additional insurance, and I didn't ask him to. He had it shipped before I even realized it. From my past parts shipping experience, it seems like UPS automatically insures it for $100. That would at least cover part of a core or some work at the machine shop.
Tonkadoc, you bet I saved all the packaging. Every bit of it. I normally don't have problems with UPS. Fedex, OTOH, screws up every single time.
I took the compressor housing off and it sucks to look at.
I would very much enjoy doing that to someone's face right about now.
Well, to salvage my mood I pulled the IP and replaced it with a turbo pump I also got my grubby paws on. I seemed to nail the timing and it runs sooooo smooth. Quieter and stronger. That other pump seems to be the original though it works fine. Now if I can only begin to get this turbo bummer straightened out...

You do, The recipient files the claim. File it tonight if possible and then contact the shipper on Monday morning first thing to discuss it.

If you call the shipping company they should be able to tell you how much insurance was put on it....I know UPS will, had to do that a couple times myself.

UPS I know for certain sends the check to the shipper, you can check with the others to make sure.

What shipping company was used.

Yea, It's a PITA, I've been on both sides of this a couple times.

That's a heck of an Oh ****! Are you sure that the pictures he sent are of the actual part received? In other words, he didn't send pictures of a good turbo, then send a damaged one that he couldn't get rid of. Just an idea. There are too many dishonest people selling on the internet these days. That would take a heck of a drop kick to cause that damage.

Yeah i am highly suspicious that you could break a housing if you tried your hardest. I'm not saying he screwed you on purpose, but I doubt dropping it would cause that big heavy metal to crack.

Tom- Yeah, the pics were of the actual unit. I am sure of that after receiving the stuff. All the parts received match all the parts in the pics. He also had it bead-blasted and offered to put in a new compressor wheel. So, I should amend my earlier comment. He's not a total *****.
I just went back out and inspected the box again, and sure enough, there is a gash in one end. I must have missed that earlier in my blind fury. It's a poke 2 fingers through-torn up edged gash. Directly where the end of the compressor would have been. And I thought I was pissed before.

The turbo is pretty heavy. The up-pipe is attached to it too, so it weighed the majority of that 46# box. The other things in that box were the y-pipe, intake hat, a few bolts and fittings, and the mount. All the weight of the turbo against that aluminum edge would surely have done this damage.
I got a laugh out of the 'fragile- handle with care' sticker on the top of the box.
