I just had brakes done on my '92 f350 dually. The front brakes were $564 and they wanted another $1000 to do the rear. They insisted on putting on new rotors. Said they don't resurface the old one anymore.
My question is, "How bad did I get ripped off.

We don't resurface rotors anymore, so that's normal. Couple reasons - mainly because rotors are made of crap steel these days. They delaminate, they wear, they warp. Run them as is they're noisy. Turn them they just warp faster. Rotors are a consumable these days.

Front rotors are not slip ons, so it's not a quickie brake job. Book time is 2.8 hrs, and actual time on a 20 year old truck in these parts is likely over 3. Without checking parts prices, and assuming they used quality parts, that price seems reasonable, maybe a tad high.

Price for the rear seems high. I checked drum prices to see if that was why, but my Napa has drums in stock that RETAIL at $100. Turning rear drums is still done sometimes, as well. I'd shop around for the rear job for sure.

Sorry to say this but those prices are way too high. Just because "they" don't rersurface rotors or drums means you find some place to spend your money. As posted above we could very easily talked you thru this job. Its a very simple job and just maybe a member here was near enough to drop by and lent some help...

For DIY, yes. Retail not really.

3 hrs @ $75/hr = $225
Premium pads (retail) = $98
Premium rotors (retail) = $111 (x2)

$545 not incl seals, shop supplies, taxes, etc. That's a break-even job for a legit shop paying a tech a real wage, comp, overhead, etc. Not a rip off. Not even a great profit job.

And as far as turning rotors, if a rotor is delaminted, you can turn it 'til the whole thing flakes to the floor, you'll never get a true surface.
If it's warped, you can turn it 'til it's true, and it'll warp again in half the time. Especially on a dually, ESPECIALLY if it's used as intended.
If the shop warranties its work, values its reputation, and doesn't want comebacks, they'll install new rotors.

i work at a Acura dealership and they wont warranty a brake job unless we turn the rotors on the vehicle. i do believe that rotors will warp faster after being turned, but there is a spec to go by, and most the time you can turn rotors on a truck and still be within spec. i have turned many rotors and have never had anyone complain about them. i also have turned the rotors on my truck, and my mustang, and they have lived though every bit of crap i have put them through. when im headed to the racetrack to race my bike, my truck is always overweight and i drive to get there asap, and also i drive home fast cause i want to get home.
on a caviler where a new rotor is 20 bucks, replace it, but on these older trucks with real metal in the rotors, you can turn them as long as there in spec.

Rotors--$57 ea. = $114

Pads set of 4 Best--$34

Hose $15 ea. = $30

Total = $266

This is when I enjoy being able to get parts at cost. I can afford to get alot better quality rotors.

I couldn't swallow that price. But I can only afford to DIY.

i also forgot to mention, before i worked at the dealer i worked at a private shop, and they were gun-ho about just replacing rotors, and they wouldnt even think about using napa rotors, they wouldnt last. every napa rotor we installed would usually come back in a couple months warped. the private shop i worked at we mostly worked on imports, bmw, Mercedes, jags, ect., we did work on a lot of hondas and toyotas as well. but it seemed the best rotors we could find were from autozone.

I think I paid $34 a piece for rotors last time I checked.

The pads were $35 ish

Remanned calipers at the local shop were about $50....so.....

((34) x2 =(50) x2 + 35) x 1.15 = 233.45 taxes in....guestamating. Prices may be a little higher or...but they are not what a shop could get them for.

So labour.... (564 - 234 = 330) $330 in labour costs.....around here that's about 5.5 - 6 hours labour at a garage.....based on $50 an hour plus taxes.

A grand to do the rear brakes?

$50 for shoes..

$48.69 for a drum x2

$12 for wheel cylinders x2

$19 Hardware kit x2

$15 hold down kit x2

(50 + (48.69 x 2) + ($12 x 2)) x 1.15 = $275.29 for parts taxes in.

The rear beakes are a LOT easier than the fronts in my opinion...especially if you aren't saving old parts. Back the shoes off, and toss EVERYTHING. No need to remove the hub.

That would be $750 in labour.....13 hours to install....that is a little high!!!

you DONT,,really want to know the whole truth,,dang...if i could charge thoe prices in my shop,,i could retire very early.....

I try to buy high quality rotors, You pay a little more, but You get thicker, higher quality steel. It holds up to higher heat cycles without warping.

The cheap a$$ed chinese steel warps like crazy!
