This sort of correlates with Seth's race M-B diesel thread, but I figured I'd start fresh.

Take a look here: http://www.kolumbus.fi/valtonen.motorsport/

There's a discussion on another M-B site about it...instead of copying thoughts from there, I'll just post the link here:

So, any BOMBers have any thoughts on this?

C'mon, let's make this board come alive :cool

BTW, a little bit of info on the OM617...the OM617 is a 3.0l inline-5 IDI diesel. It was available in turbo and natuarlly-aspirated forms. The n/a 617 was available from '75 until '81, and the turbo 617 was available in the U.S. from '81 until '85. European W123's (the 300D/240D and whatnot from '77 until '85, sort of like my car) used the n/a 617 exclusively, for whatever reason. The lucky bums in Europe could also get a 617-powered 123 with a manual transmission; the only manual-transmission 123's we ever saw in the U.S. were 240D's (with an OM616 2.4l 4 cylinder).
