I need to retire (put up in the barn) my gasser I6 after over 300K miles.

The IDI stays.

I'm considering another truck (just gotta have two). Is there a "best year" for a PSD?

Thanks!

IMO the best year PSDs are the '97s & '02s because it was the last year of production of that engine (they got all the bugs figured out by then). Deciding on an OBS or SD may come down to how much you want to spend.

BTW, I retired a '91 F-150 straight six with 252K when I got mine.

In the OBS the 96 and 97's were good solid trucks (nothing wrong with the 94-95's either but the 6&7's had some upgrades) and in the SD I would look for a low mileage 01 if I had power mods in mind as they had the forged rods still or if I wasnt going power crazy I'd look for an 03 with a 7.3 in it.

so the 02-03s lacked forged rods? while the 01s had them?
Correct, the 2's&3's went to PMR's, which are fine upto about 400hp and above that they like to put holes in the block.

man, you learn something every day, thats very good advice. was there any other strength differences between motors?
Nothing that proper tuning cant overcome. I do think the 03's came off the assy line witih more HP than did the 1's&2's though.

97 was 215 horspower, don't recall the torque.
Early 99 same
Late 99 235 HP @ 500 torque
2001 automatic 250 HP @ 505 TQ
Manual 275 HP @ 505 or 520 not sure now.

I had a 97 F250 five speed with 4:10 GR Pretty good truck. Neighbor bought it and has had very little problems. Its bone stock.

I have a 2001 with a manual transmission. Has 26K on the clock. Other than the clutch cyd I've had no problems with it.
