97 was 215 horspower, don't recall the torque.
Early 99 same
Late 99 235 HP @ 500 torque
2001 automatic 250 HP @ 505 TQ
Manual 275 HP @ 505 or 520 not sure now.

I had a 97 F250 five speed with 4:10 GR Pretty good truck. Neighbor bought it and has had very little problems. Its bone stock.

I have a 2001 with a manual transmission. Has 26K on the clock. Other than the clutch cyd I've had no problems with it.

96 and 97 came with 410 torque

the '99 and and 00 extended cab rear seat folds flat for a nice storage shelf, i think Ford changed the rear seat in 00 or 01 to a different design. the '99 psd has the smaller turbo that doesnt need (or already has) the "wicked wheel" mod. torque converters sucked in 99. but can be swapped out for the updated non-rattle model. 99 has forged rods... i dunno it's a toss up if you ask me. i'd look for the body you want and deal with the quirks from that year.

unless you go OBS then i hear 97 or 96 are the year you want

have fun

the valve cover sticker on my early '99 auto says 250 HP @ 2700

i have read before that the 99 had a lower rating. but then why does my sticker on my (as far as i know) original stock engine say 250?

Some have two stickers on them. That's probably the international sticker. The ford sticker will say 235

FWIW the early 99 / no intercooler have less HP then the later 99 with intercooler.
Early 2001 six speeds had a lower HP rating than the later 2001 six speeds, go figure.

mine has an IC and the truck's build date is 09/98. does that make it an early 99? i went and bought brake parts once and i think the cutoff date for the funky early 99 brakes was after my build date.

ok so maybe you dont want a 99 unless you find a good deal on one like i did.

I don't think the Super Duty (99-on) 7.3's were ever sold without intercoolers, although they did use a different intercooler in the late 99's as opposed to the early 99's.
