I initially wanted to be faster than an 04 Maxipad... I will cut and paste snippets...
Me: there is a guy I work around that has a Maxipad that won't shut up about it, Cold air, programmer, and exhaust are all I think that has been done to it.
His truck is faster, his kids are smarter, his dog fetches better, and his wife is a better ....
blah blah blah.... than anyone else's ****.. ever...
Thought about a Fummins, but that is too common....
Then I had a thought.... why not a hyper bored monster IDI....?
Not that it will ever smoke the Dmax, but I would like to be close enough he takes it in to the shop for a tune up.....
Initial thoughts are machine a squared bore and stroke, balanced rotating mass, reground cam, head work, and then boost boost boost.
Cetanes thoughts are say two t3's, or other small turbo's feeding a larger turbo, for a 40-50 psi set up that spools quick and off the line, and with the larger unit has staying power.
My thoughts on dimension changing is maximized volumetric efficency, and changing base line peaks ,and a 300 rpm power band, e.g. 1k - 4k on the tach.
We have now headed down the "lets use a PSD block, crank, rods, etc" path.....
Thoughts?
Some other guy who owns and has enjoyed his IDI's:
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that by the time your done building an IDI to make power you could have swapped in a 500HP 12V
if you only shooting for around 300 to 350 i think that could be done for around 4k but wanting it to be reliable brings out a whole other story, i have looked into making my 7.3 idi around 350 and it will take some work biggest thing is block, rods, pistons ect, and being limited on fuel delivery. I have heard of people cracking the cylinder walls on the blocks around 350hp due to the thin casting on the back of the block.
honestly think the IDIs are good motors just with minimal upgrades like a turbo and some pump tweaking. i enjoy the **** outta driving mine, with the turbo and pump turned up its just over 200hp to the wheels
This guy is on here.. "Hyde" :
Ok I'll give you my take on building an IDI. This is just whats been rolling around in my head for a while. Start with a 6.9 block, stud everything, use factory turbo rods with custom lower compression pistons for the 6.9 bore, port and polish heads, run a 12-14cm Hx35. Moose Pump and Moose Misters from Agnem and a cam from Typ4 on Oilburners. 4k gov spring in the DB2 and dont forget an intercooler. Gonna have to find someone with more money than me to try it though
Back to my thoughts currently...
Just saying.. throw your 2k, 2500 at the motor, have a good time.. just be aware.. you will not out run a 5.9/6.0/6.6/6.7 (ford or Dodge) at those numbers you will then create....
You will have a fun, moderately quick truck that will work better.
