I have been told that this has something to do with some kind of control on the E4od.

That white part looks like a vacuum line has broken off, or something.

Can someone tell me what this is, what it does, and how to test it?

So I gotta hold a map up to it?

What if it don't like the map it senses?

Should I show it something specific? Like Timbuktu, or New York, which would it like best?

Which map does it want? That depends on whether you have a 4x2 hi-way queen or a 4x4 dirt eater. You have to give us more specifics.

MAP sensor= manifold absolute pressure.. You can Google that.

That sensor tells the transmission controller what your relative altitude is by reading atmospheric pressure. Engines generally lose Hp with altitude due to less dense air, so ford determined it was worth factoring this into the E4OD shift schedule.

What's shocking is that ford decided to leave this obscure sensor in plain sight so that it would be easy to replace when it fails.

Does anyone know if there is supposed to be a hose on that?

No hose, it reads atmospheric pressure. I believe the signal output is in hertz. Dont know what the spec would be.
