Another GV question for Mel (or anyone)

I’ve been checking these things out for quite some time. One question I have is around the Lube of the unit.

For the purpose of my question, I’ll divide the GV setup into 3 chambers:
1. tranny (or transfer case) with GV adaptor
2. Area created by the GV adaptor (between the tranny and the GV unit itself)
3. GV unit

So the question is which areas get whose lube?
Does the tranny lube stop at the tranny side of the adaptor? Or does it flood all the way to the face of the GV unit?

Is the area created by the GV adaptor dry or filled with lube?

Is the GV unit lube contained within the unit? Or does it flood into the adaptor?

I’ve sort-of asked the same question 4 different ways, but hopefully you get the gist of it.

every GV I have ever laid hands on had their own oiling system. "If" you had a watermatic, there will be contact from the trans fluid to the front of most GV's unless you are running a divorced unti like Mel. The adaptor to mount up the GV takes place of the trans tailcone(if it has one) and would be subject to an oil bath just like your your stock tailcone would.

In the Moose Truck, the GV adapter bolts to the GV supplied xfer case half, and that half is full of ATF just like it would be before, and just as when the driveshaft was bolted to it, there would be no ATF leakage beyond the xfer case seal. Consequently, the short adapter piece which goes between the Xfer case, and the GV unit should in theory be dry inside, since it is just a shaft connecting the two pieces. I think there may be a greased bearing in there, but I can't really recall. It's been 8 years since I touched it. The oil used in the GV is different from what would be used in anything that it is bolted to, so keeping the oil seperate is important.

That is how mine is set up also. The GV unit is bolted directly to the T-case does not exchange any fluids.

Lot less messy that way :rolleyes:
