Another Electric Fan Thread

I am going to try out E fans so I spent yesterday at the salvage yard. There were a few 3.0 Taurus fans but no 3.8's. I did find a Windstar setup though and snagged it. I also pulled a dual fan setup from a 2001 cadillac deville with the northstar v8. After testing the fans the windstar set seem to pull more air, so I will use them. What I would like to do is have two thermostatic controllers, one for low and one for high. Low would kick on the smaller fan, high would kick on the larger fan. They would be set up to have the smaller fan come on first, then the larger one as well when needed.

I was thinking about using the Hayden 3653 controllers. I read somewhere that you don't need relays when using the controllers.. Is that correct?

there is a better way,though usually better means higher cost as is the case with this.i use the windstar fans too but with a variable rate controller.
the advantages are; no relays to burn out.both fans spin at the same time,which means even airflow over the rad,rather than just on one side.no hassles,set it and forget it.
i have the extra control knob and the indicator up by the water temp gauge on the pillar.

I plan to use 2 hayden controllers when I get to mine. The controllers have relays on them, but I've had so many die on Bruiser's setup that I'll be using them to trigger stand alone relays.

yes.i found the key to additional cooling is not in trying too ******* coolant temp alone,but once you begin to add additional engine oil cooling,the coolant temps are much,much,much easier to keep a handle on.
i found the e-fans kept my coolant temps below 240F ok but because in July and August i got very quick spikes hen pulling grades.i pulled over and shot my oil pan and read 260F! that's not too hot for synthetic oil no but,those oil temps are going to transfer into higher coolant temps,like yesterday.that's when i added an aux cooler and i don't see that anymore.
(very pricey though because no one makes a standard oil cooler sandwich for the 7.3l idi/psd!)

Btw, Focus 3.0L fans are the same as Taurus 3.8L fans, just in a smaller package. I'm going to attempt 4 JDM fans the first time around. 12" ones maybe?

IF e fans can match the cooling power of the stock mech fan Then the extra power is usable.
Cruising heavy not an issue.
Tugging elevation and grades loaded down' now I'm interested.

I want e fans but need cooling for towing hot.

I've been reading up' still not convinced.

I run 4 12 inch fans. I use the Hayden controller with probe foil taped at top radiator inlet comes on around 140f. The other two fans I control with a separate switch in the water pump that comes on at 200f. I route my fan ground through the wiring and have pigtail tabs to ground nearby for an easy bypass if I need to test or bypass a failed temp switch.

I have a 120 amp remote solenoid that powers these, the fuel pump, the other two fans for my water intercooler radiator, the watee intercooler coolant pump is on a engine coolant temp sensor that comes on at 80f. I have a delay timer on that relay to prevent the power for fans from coming on until 30 seconds after running but ended up not using it because my 250 amp alternator didn't seem to care about all that and glow plug draw.

At 75mph weighing 9,000lb on an 80f day I have not seen coolant go above 200f. It's typically 190 to 195f. It was 70f the other day, I had about a 6k trailer behind me at 65mph and it never got above 195f. All with ac on the whole time and a giant intercooler radiator in front of my radiator too. I did see sustaintial heat soak, pre turbo intake temps of 140 to 150f with an intake that actually pulls below radiator so I purchased a cowl hood to use as a vent to hopefully reject the heat upward rather than down and below truck. Just gotta get a couple hours to paint it.
