Got a friend that has this car and it will only go in first gear? is it hard fix? and how costly? I might be able to pick it up cheap??

Is this an Auto? If so transsmission shifting is controlled by vacuum on the W123's. I'd look into the vacuum system. After that check Schumanautomotive.com/forums. There is a TON of info there with guys that really seem to know their stuff.

Maintaining an older W123 Benz body style is not as expensve as one might think.

ok thanks the owner did say he rebuilt the vacuum pump? maybe a busted line?

There is an adjustment on the trans that handles the shifting.
