I had problems with my mechanical fuel pump and replaced it with a Facet electric pump years ago. Priming is straightforward, no need to crank the engine and wear down the batteries.
If you want to keep your mechanical fuel pump, plumb an electric one in parallel, not series, like jim_22 suggested.

Two tees and a check valve will work to plumb an electric pump in parallel.
