hello oil burners (first post :sly )
i have a 1993 7.3 idi that i am building for a towing/fun vehicle and would like your expertise,
i have done the basics, installed a pyro, maxed out my ip, straight pipes and removed the soup bowl....
but like most guys i would like some more, i would like to stay from the turbo route as it quickly gets expensive but i am not against it
i would like to improve my induction system and have thought about a ram air system by cutting a hole in the hood... which looks like crap so i would like some possible alternatives,
another question is after installing the pyro i went from a quarter turn on my ip to max but was surprised with no more smoke/power than before,
prior to a electrical issue that after recurring no power to my primary pumps in my two tanks i just put a micro pump before my lift pump that boasts a great 4-7 psi :dunno so maybe that is the issue or maybe my stock intake??
thanks for everyone's help this has been a great site for me!!!!

Well, just to clear up one thing, you do not have any in tank electric pumps. Only the mechanical pump on the side of the engine. So, your lift pump went out, and you masked it by putting the electric pump in front of it. Not an ideal setup, because if the diaphragm in the lift pump bursts, you flood your oil with diesel thinning it out.

There is a lot of great info here. Read read read. There is several good days worth of reading on here too.

Your pump not putting out any more fuel might be that it is just wearing out. Proper timing and good injectors and pump would be the best thing you can do other than a .....well, I won't say it! Haha

Good luck.

Ps, we like pictures.

You must have already had it maxed or it's time for a new ip because mines maxed and it smokes like a freight train im not even kidding.my suggestion is turn it back down im afraid to pull trailers with mine because it gets hot fast.and stayin n/a your not gonna get much power out of it.you could put a type4 cam in it and gain some power but without putting a turbo on your not gonna get much

the fuel pump i am using sets in front of the lift pump, this is the one i am using http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mrg-12d
i have thought about possibly getting this pump as it provides double the psi? without the electric motor running the truck idles horribly then dies... possible dying ip?
if i need to replace my ip i would probably get a moose ip but which one? i feel like the descriptions of these ips are geared so the conestega guys are covering their own a$$ insurance wise in case someones idi melts... or should i follow their suggestions?

thanks again for all your help!

You can't really pump through a electric pump. That's why it runs chitty when it's off.
Either electric or the mechanical, not both.
Double the psi is bad on the pump. It'll screw with the timing. Look up duralift pump on these forums.
Mel/agnem (Conestoga diesel) is a stand up, up front guy.

thanks 79jasper!
my issue is it wasnt getting fuel to the injectors and therefore not starting before i put in the electric pump/after i replaced the lift pump... so maybe it is the ip that is out?

smoke pictures on a maxed out IP on a N/A engine, that cant get out of its own way?
i cant say that i do like them.
rolling coal because you think its "cool" is just plain "ignant"
if you're getting the most out of your truck, and have done all you can do to gain max hp and or ft/lbs,
like...
adding a turbo,
higher volume IP,
matched injectors,
FMIC,
timed properly,
and all of the supporting mods
is a different story entirely.

but turning your fuel up on a N/A engine, does not do much for your performance.
and will lead to melted chunks of aluminum and steel.

i can honestly say, the only thing cool about the things youve posted is that i can buy these trucks for dirt cheap, and then
**** them for parts.

welcome to OB.
and dont be rolling coal like a honda with a fart can and a 4 foot spoiler.

The electric lift pump you installed is not sufficient. The Holley Red is a 97 GPH pump, and we have issues with that one at higher fueling levels with our higher output Moose Pumps. Your pump flows half that, so I can only imagine your fuel pressure must drop to zero when you get on it, hence your lack of improvement when maxing out the fuel screw.

The descriptions I have on the web site are intended to help you pick the right pump for your truck. Anybody can file suit on anyone any day for any reason, so that's hardly a specialized concern. The idea is that you get what gives you the best operational value for the configuration you have. Without a turbo, I would not recommend anything bigger than a Baby Moose.

As for your other ideas on improving N/A performance, many improvements can help, but individually, they are only capable of adding a few horsepower at a time. When you compare money and effort spent on making those improvements, they are all pale in comparison to what turbocharging will do. Most NA owners who put off turbocharging, eventually give in and do it, and then kick themselves for waiting so long.

Yeah. Like me. I did everything I could to try to get power out of my truck. I just wasn't happy. I mean, who wants to struggle to do 70 mph if you have any headwind at all? A turbo made a massive difference.

Welcome to the forum. As others have said, read read read. There is a ton of info on here.

aha yes the stereotype that im rolling coal because its "cool" when in all actuality, i began my search for more power when my truck had to down to second on the highway with a truck and trailer full of firewood, as for destroying my idi, i have taken the necessary precautions to help prevent any damage, pyro, exhaust ect and i dont just use my gas petal as a on/off switch either!

ATS 093 with full 3" downpipe. I have the wastegate set to 13 psi of boost. Again: search, read, digest, read some more. Basically any question you might have has likely already been answered. Start at the top of the main forum page and read all the sticky threads and links they may contain. You can thank me later LOL
