Made it home today. Truck ran great, got 12mpg dragging the trailer full of all my tools and equipment. The trans now sounds horrible, with a vibration at 2300rpm in 5th gear. I have no idea if I messed up the pilot bearing when I stabbed the trans, or if i have another issue. Anyone want to see this video and chime in, comments are welcome...

ryan-
i wouldn't be so fast to condemn the trans so quick. otoh, there has been documented incidents where the pressure plate was not drilled concentrically. Heath was the recipient of one of those. along with a very odd wear pattern on the pressure plate fingers and the TOB, the "camming" of the pressure plate is very obvious with the motor running. this is the reason why I still run the DMF and scrounge for usable DMF's any chance I get. firstly, I hate the rollover noise and secondly, there's nothing worse than having to pull apart the trans again due to a poorly machined part.
just my .02......
oh btw, since we're showing off our co-pilots, here's one of my daughter from years ago. if to take a look at the reflection in the windshield, you will see her toy towtrucks on the dash too.;Sweet

I'd rather pull the tranny to replace a defective warranteed part than pull it to replace a grenaded, unwarranteed tranny case.

Cute co-pilot pic! This is the closest we have to a co-pilot....

Well, I'm a little late to the party, but I'm here. Yes, like Calvin said, I got a bad flywheel and it vibrated the entire truck at 2200-2500RPM. I got a replacment SMF, but I sent it with all my other rotating assembly parts to the engine balancer. The flywheels used for these SMF kits all seem to come from the same casting company. No idea where they are cast, but, my experience with them shows a lack of quality control. The 2nd flywheel was off balance enough that the engine balancer called and asked me if I was sure these flywheels are supposed to be used on IDI's.LOL He drilled some holes in the flywheel to get it where it should have been out of the box.

The big difference between what I experienced and what you are experiencing..... it didn't make noise like that....... none at all, just vibration.

I'll try and find some pic's to post for ya. But, I'd leave the flywheel and pressure plate on the engine after the trans has been pulled............ support the rear of the engine and make sure the fan is clear of the rad 1st. The run the engine and see if there is any camming (off center rotation) of the pressure plate on the flywheel.

If the flywheel and pressure plate are good.......... I hope your tranny isn't as messed up as this tranny is............ LOL

Heath-

Thanks for the input. I'll get it torn down and see what I can do about warrantying the flywheel. I'm not optomistic but we will see.

As for your photo- I prefer my kind of tranny trouble to your sort of trannie trouble...

most of my cats aren't travel friendly. i had one elderly cat who didn't care where you took him as long as where he was at was warm.

DONE! Flywheel arrived this morning at 9:30. I was at the shop at 10, and done by 11:30. All went well, but the rollover noise is pretty noticeable, especially stopped in neutral without the clutch depressed. I increased the idle speed to about 900 rpm, which took care of most of it, but I may look into a different trans fluid when I get home.

I felt bad throwing away the old DMF, but saw no sense in hauling it home with no intent of reinstalling...

Ryan

I put my fast idle solenoid on a toggle switch so I can let her sit running in nuetral at about 1000rpm, no roll over noise at all. If I let her idle without it - it's scary...LOL....My trans is full to the fill plug, that's it. Working fine for 3yrs now this way. I have a 6.9 T19 SMF on my 7.3 with a T19 PP and a disc with springs.

Luckly we have probably 5 or 6 members that live in or around Vegas. All of them are great guys too.

Thanks for the offers of help. I need to get my schedule together and figure out when ill have time to work on it. Luckily, in my line of work I can use a lift at a dealership to remove the trans and make short work of it. Then it's a matter of figuring out where the problem is. Hopefully it'll be obvious once I disassemble it. I think the clutch has a lifetime warranty on it through oriellys- I may be putting their customer service to the test.

I agree it's too early to condemn the trans, but I can see where someone would! It sounds terrible! It's awfully frustrating. I know thousands of people run the SMF setup, and I can't believe they all stand for this kind of noise, so I know mine isn't right. I've heard gear rollover, and this is NOT just rollover.

Anybody in Vegas have one with a SMF I can compare to? I'd like to get two side by side and see.

I'll be visiting there, but not until June. And then I'll be in North L.V. But I'll try and hit ya'll up. Sounds like we could get five or six trucks together.

We should definitely put together a mini-meet before it gets too hot!

MedicMoe- is your truck an auto or manual?
