Over the past two months, my E4)D in my F250 has been acting up when it wants to...unprovoked.

Everytime it did it, I would check the connetions, check the fluid and temperature for signs of problems. I NEVER found anything unusual.

Eventually I changed the FIPL with another used one, and had the same results. I adjusted the voltage to 1.2 at idle to 3.8 at WOT. I should point out that this is the early "black" FIPL and not the later "grey" FIPL sender. Apparently the black ones had a higher failure rate than the grey ones.

I cleaned the engine harness pins inside the plug, and applied grease to keep moisture out. This didn't seem to help much.

I don't know why it keeps popping into limp mode, but I have noticed a pattern. It only pops into limp mode while climbing the only hill on the way to work at 100 KM/H. 1/3 - 1/2 of the way up it will pop into limp mode and stay there, but occasionally it comes back out of it on it's own. Sometimes I go 20 kilometers before it goes into limp mode, and other times I can go 200 kilometers before I go into limp mode. But it is usually a hill that triggers it.

I want to have it plugged in, but lately I am working from 3am until 6 or 7pm, 6 days a week. Combined with the fact that I don't get a paycheck for a month because I went from working under the table to back on the payroll for the season, which hurts. Good news is I get an $1800 paycheck on Saturday, and then one every two weeks agter that!;Sweet

Any thoughts or similar happenings out there?

Did you notice if the tach quit working when it goes into limp mode? Check the tach sender on the IP gear cover, the leads have a tendency to get bear coming out of it and the fan will blow them together and short out, the tranny needs the signal from there. Check the plug connection also.

Excellent point. I forgot to mention that I replaced the tach sensor last fall because it was acting up. It works flawlessly.

I thought it might be a water getting into the wiring issue, but it's done this wet, dry, hot, cold. Weather easing on the throttle or WOT it kicks into limp mode.

solenoid pack going bad? my brothers truck acted kinad funny a lot and when we went to change the solenoid pack the entire plug and connector pulled straight out of the pack! The connections had come loose in the pack and must have been shorting. might want to take that out and have it tested. they have stand alone controllers that use compressed air and a computer to open and close the solenoids....

How hard is it to remove the solenoid pack? I am told that it is the first thing you are looking at after you remove the valve body.

Drop the pan, you will see it. It will have a orange or gray plastic strip across it. Maybe green or black too. Ford has many colors for it.:D

yep no removing teh valvebody. its got like ten or something torx bolts and then one 10mm nut on a stud. just be care taking it out and putting it in to not mess up that seal.

oh and if you need a new one bite the bullet and get a new one. the reman ones are a crap shoot as to whether you get a good one or not. it'll save you a lot of possible hassle to get a new one. ;Sweet
