Hey y'all. Hope everyone is cruising their rides this summer. I got a question and I'm hoping someone had an answer. I want to buy one of those bed campers for my truck. The door sticker says her gvwr is 8,600lbs. Does that make her a 1 ton? Or did they only make these f250 6.9s in 3/4 ton?

F-250 is a 3/4 ton truck... Not that it means anything. Your GVRW is 8600; weigh the truck empty and see what payload you have.

My '93 has a GVWR of 8800, and weighs 6600 empty(with just me in it). So, I can put 2200lbs in the bed without being overweight.

If you could put 2200 in the bed wouldn't that make it a one ton? That's what gets me. I had to weigh my truck for a move about a year ago, she was 5200 empty without me or any ruel in it. I wouldn't think that means I could put 3,000lbs in it but I have definitely loaded a ton of soil before.

You would think that. My F350 weighs 7500# so I can haul 2500#.that's a crew cab dually (10,000gvwr). I'd guess a regular cab long bed with a gvwr of 9600 would be around 5500# which would give you a payload of 4100# or two tons. They're more of a "Classification" than anything calling them "half ton" or "one ton" etc.

Yea, the:
F-150 = 1/2 ton
F-250 = 3;4 ton
F-350 = 1 ton

Is misleading, and I think goes way back, like 50’s or 60’s when that was the case..... it definitely doesn’t apply for anything modern.....

For example, my 11 F-150 in my signature, per the book, has a 6750 GVW, and 1900 payload capacity. I’ve not weighed it, but is 100% stock and I don’t have much in it.... I know loading up with my tractor on a trailer and the other stuff in the bed, it doesn’t lower the ride height much....

I put a pallet of interlocking retaining wall bricks from home Depot in the bed of my '86 f-250 for a total of 3,000 lbs and the guy driving behind me said it looked fine driving down the road.
I used to have an '88 Lance cabover camper in it which was about 700lbs over the gvwr with full gas tanks and no passenger and I got around just fine with some suspension air bags. Lived in that thing for 8 months of my pipe trades apprenticeship and took it all over northern California.

3/4 ton, 1 ton etc. are nominal ratings. GVW minus light is the real payload, typically considerably more than nominal rating.

8600 gvw is a 3/4 ton. 8800 for reg cab or 9000 for ext cab is a 1 ton. No real difference other than nominal class. (Heavier 1 ton ratings are different) insurance, dot refs, etc. can be different for different nominal classes (I.e. 3/4, 1 ton, etc.) which is why you have the different classes with essentially same gvw.

For period reference, my 86 f350 8' drw 4-door weighed 6700 with:
- spare tire and I think one full fuel tank, random tools & spare fluids
- aluminum wheels (4)
- a stout camper top
- a stout drop bumper

GVW is 9200.

It took a while but from some hole patterns and airbags I believe it was set up for a slide-in camper. That has me thinking hard about doing the same, but I am having trouble figuring out how to do what I want and stay at least close to that 9200lbs.

I did try loading it up with about 3600lbs of wood pellets and coal for a test run. Drove fine, but that's when my IP said, "Enough!". That was an expensive tow, but really glad it was not with a camper & 7000lb trailer on a 2400mi trip...

Cheers,
- Jeff

Hell yeah thanks guys. Norcan sounds like a damn good time. I lived in Humboldt for 5 years and that whole area is amazing. Just couldn't get over all the libs and junkies. Ended up leaving in 2016. I've loaded 1 ton of soil in the bed before and she drove great from what I could tell. Didn't look too bogged down either. I'll be shopping around for a nice bed camper or travel trailer and from what it sounds like I'll be just fine. Thanks for all the input
