I have allways thought I would like to get an old Mercedes diesel.
what is it like getting parts for and where do you order parts from.
MB Classic Center and eBay have been my go-tos, there are other websites that specialize in such things, mercedessource has a decent selection for these old 60’s Benzs.

Getting parts for it hasn’t been difficult, but it does require patience and the tariffs can get expensive… without the internet, getting the parts would probably be impossible…

New door seals on the way from Germany. Other odds and ends too…

I have driven almost 1000 miles. It gets low 30s for fuel economy, but of course it is very slow. 60 mph seems to be the sweet spot, it can maintain speed up the shallower hills at that speed. Steep grades still slow it down.

The power disc brakes are fantastic.

It is comfortable to drive and ride in, and has plenty of leg room and trunk space.

I need to put new motor mounts in it, I have new ones on the shelf.

I am beginning to get used to the four speed column shift, it is an exceptionally smooth transmission, much as smooth as the rest of the car.

The engine has a slight oil leak, but it’s pretty minimal. Only 1/4 of a quart in nearly 1000 miles.

Having talked to the MB Classic Center, and after a VIN inspection, the car has been determined to be a 1965, one of the last 40 190Dcs imported into the United States. There were some inconsistencies in the car’s paperwork, but they have been sorted out. Mercedes has been most helpful in fact checking everything.

Motor mounts are in. I didn’t know this car could get smoother.

I should replace the gearbox mounts, they are a little worse for wear, but not as bad as the engine mounts. The drivers side was beginning to separate, adding some high frequency vibrations at 45-55 MPH. Those are gone now.

I haven’t driven the car in a while, although I did start it the other day, and let it fully warm up.

There is an axle boot next to the rear diff, that has split and leaks badly. I have been waiting for the boot to arrive, according to my service manual it’s a 30 minute job. I haven’t been waiting for the part for 30 days yet, but it’s probably getting close to that amount of time.

Shortly after that last post, the part arrived. I have been working out by Scottsbluff, Nebraska, so I hadn’t had time to work on the car, until today. Took a little more than an hour to replace the boot. Holds 2 1/2 quarts of oil in the axle, surprising to me, as it isn’t much bigger than the diff on a quad bike…

Fired right up, has been sitting since the 21st of May. Drove it around a little, parked it before the weather turned foul. I hope to drive it tomorrow, and then I’ll probably drop it off at a local shop to get the air conditioning up and going Monday.

Glad to hear an update on this and things are coming along. A coworker has a '63 coupe with the gas engine, he's the second owner after his father purchased it new. Always thought these old MBs were mighty classy. Think the gas engine might be mechanical fuel injection? When this thread was first started told him about it and talked his ear off a bit and asked if his had the nighttime illumation feature on the hood area - his does not...
I personally don't know much about the vintage MB and other Euro makes but it's really nice to learn about model numbers and all that stuff. Hope you have lots of time to drive it this summer!
