Alright, so I installed a duralift electric lift pump (9-13 +-) psi for my 87 F250 with a stock turbo kit from a 94 truck. Still when I start the truck cold it will smoke white (unburned) until it reaches operating temp (water temp > 140*F). Idles at 700-720 rpm and cold idle advance at 900-950 rpm. Also noted that when I shift into 2nd gear (ZF5) unloaded it will puff a good bit of black smoke. When I’m cruising at 55-65 1900-2250 rpm the truck will smoke with a light black haze out of the exhaust when under any boost. Sounds fine while running and has plenty of power, but has this annoying smoke. Sounds retarded or too advanced???

Too retarded
The idle sounds loud and healthy as it is, but I still have slight bits of smoke here and there. Could it be a sign of too much advance? If not, what are the typical signs of too much advance from your experience if you know.

For one, on cold (fast) idle, it will sound extremely clattery. Almost a hurts the ears type of sound (to me).

The quick and dirty way to get the timing close by ear is on a cold engine, the high+advanced idle should sound like the "powerstroke rattle". Quite loud and sharp. Then once the advance and high circuit kick down, it'll quiet with the sharpness reducing about halfway(to my ears at least). And of course everyone is different with hearing and experience. I found personally that my engine likes it on the high side of noisy/rattle and runs much better that way.
I have a meter but haven't verified the timing recently...

As for your smoke issues, if it's the black smoke driving around you're worried about, you can turn the IP down a flat.
