Does the heater work better at 190 than 160? I would think so. The coolant that supplies the heat to the heater core is hotter at 190. More heat inside the heater core means more heat coming out the vents, at least that's the way I see it.

The heat does work better when the truck is hotter.

Alright so I put another new motorcraft fan clutch on today and I have the same result kinda. It hold temp just idling but once you start going then go down a hill it cools back off.

190f warmed up, hard towing i was around 215 last time with a few passes at 230. Not sure what the upper limits are, idk if 230 is safe constant...

The check ball sits in the upper hose outlet, behind a small rubber hose chunk inside. You have to take it off to see it iirc, use stainless steel bb and a hose that fits snug in the hole, hose inner diameter smaller than bb, make it so the bb can move, but just barely.

Fantastic, good to know! I put in mechanical gauges finally, towing the trailer hard against head winds in the gorge to go camping (gusts up to 80 or more there) it didn't go past 230 or so on inclines. Maybe one blip to 235. I have electric fans on a short wide rad. Otherwise its always at 190 when warmed up.

A while ago I had to solder up one of the channels on this rad (rock puncture, I just pulled rad, moved the fins away from the tube, removed the paint and cleaned the bare metal well, went to town), and when I first got it the prior owner had damaged the overflow barb so I fixed that too. Still holding strong. I think as long as corrosion isnt an issue brass may be easier for field servicing due to not having plastic tanks. But I am curious about those 4-row aluminums if this one lets go.

Not intending to derail, but on a similar tone:
My EGT however would creep up on steep inclines (up to ~1000ºF) , I either had to haul ass in 3rd gear near governor to conquer the inclines, or cruise in 4th and eventually bog down to second and crawl up. Banks non-wg turbo is topping out around 5-6psi so I don't think an intercooler will help much. Maybe a more efficient modern turbo, cam grind? Or I could build one of those methanol kits I suppose, more power and cooler intake temps.
