Buying a IDI Turbo. What do I look for?

So I’m going to look at a 94 factory turbo on Wednesday. Owner says it runs great any tests or anything I should do to check the integrity and strength of the motor? I don’t want to not see something and end up with a dud. Thanks.

How much is he asking? How old is the kit? Is it just the turbo, or the whole kit? Or is it a partial kit? Is it a turbo for a van or a truck?

All these things impact the our analysis. Some worn kits might be worth it, because the price might be low enough to justify buying it anyway and invest in a reseal kit.

It was rather vague. I guess the only clue that he had in all of his text (title and wording) was the word "motor," which is one of my pet peeves. Otherwise, it seemed like he was shopping for a turbo. Hard to tell with the way he wrote it.

So sorry guys. I’m buying a 1994 F450 that has a factory turbo system from what I’m told. I don’t know much more. I know it’s a 5 speed manual and has 251k miles. As for the price i am trading him a car. He is asking $4k and that’s about the value of my car. He states it runs great. If there is a checklist of things to check please send me a link. I’m on Tapatalk and searching for stuff on forums is somewhat difficult at times. Thanks again and sorry for the concussion. As for the term motor my apologies, I assume engine is the correct term.

Hmmm. $4K is a bit steep for a 2wd IDI pickup with a quarter million miles. It better have a super clean frame and body.

got any pics of the engine and body? any maintenance records? Maybe if he had a new IP and injectors, new tires, new accessories, etc, then maybe $4K is justified, but at 250,000 miles, that truck will be a money pit. Accessories and other parts will start failing, and you'll be wrenchin on it all the time.

It does have 6 new tires. It’s a single cab with a flatbed and a 100 gallon fuel tank and pump. Yes I have some pics.

As for a money pit, is it not worth getting? I was real excited about it and knew some money would go into it eventually, but though for as old as it is it looked alright.

Honestly, if it runs well and has good service records it’s worth it. That’s a lot of truck for the money

The bed and fuel transfer tank make it worth the price. You need to remember this is a 24 year old work truck, things will need attention, things will break. If you are able to repair or replace things, these trucks are a bargain. If you do not have a place or the ability to fix it yourself then it becomes a financially poor decision to own one.

I’m in south Texas and would love 4x4 but the chance to trade straight up is appealing to me. Ideally I want a 4dr 4x4 but again this truck will work great for running to town to get supplies and such and to tow my trailer from time to time.

Show me anyone here that has bought a idi and didn't have to wrench on it.

Sounds like he wants the truck more than the car. Go for it.
No one else saw it, but isn't that a F-SuperDuty? Looks like 10 lug to me.

That f-superduty will be a great truck for towing anything, but with the solid axle and Dana 80 it rides rough. Not an ideal running around truck, but it’s still a good deal

I would snatch that up in a heartbeat. Looks like that will be a good truck, plus it looks like it’s a ZF-5! Don’t worry about the miles, they can go a long ways before needing any major attention as long as you take care of it.
