Developed a misfire, when taking temps of exhaust ports with temp gun cylinder 1 reads 70 degrees while all others are at 170. Pulled injector and popped test was good. Pull valve cover and found head bolt broken on number 7 cylinder.

Wow. I’ve never seen that happen, the breaking torque on those stock bolts is 160 ft lbs iirc so that’s really odd. Has that engine ever been apart?

Engine is a rebuilt can't remember the builder at the moment. Its odd to pull the valve cover and see a broken bolt with a washer in three pieces, has nothing to do with a torque wrench recently, maybe 15 years back when the engine was assembled.

Looking closer at the bolt it just looks like the top popped off. There is absolutely no twisting of the grain of metal at the break.

Bolt turned easily so used a screw driver to back it out a turn till I could grip it by hand.

Good thing that bolt came out easy. Could have been a lot worse.
Bet you the rebuilder overtorqued all the head studs on that engine, making them all junk and prone to breaking at some point. There’s a reason why there is a torque limit on all bolts but some think it’s better to overtorque them .

Overtorqued bolt with an overheat and some head warpage putting more strain on it perhaps?
