^^^good to delineate the difference in heavy hauling grades in extreme heat vs loaded down on semi level ground .
Me I saw the 88 bounce the needle off 250 pulling a ****** 6k up to yosemite.
So far the 93 keeps its cool.

I've been running my last few tanks without diesel additive. The last tank was the first tank with the new SX257 turbo, I averaged 14.1mpg. I've run one tank since the clutch fan install (600 miles) and averaged 13.9. It's been much hotter and I now spend time idling through a few phone calls at job sites since the ac works at idle. So in my mind moving back to the clutch fan made no difference in fuel economy.

So i hooked up the Jeep behind the truck for a quick test pull and the truck was getting warm on flat ground with cool weather! The only thing left is the clutch fan. When i got done pulling i got out and spun the fan and it turned pretty easy but more resistance then normal. I never hear the fan kick up higher when it gets warm.

What does the inside if you radiator look like looking through the cap? If there's white or brown on the cores, i can gaurantee it's not transfering well. When you say warm, what the real temperature? I just got back from a 200 mile trip at 75mph the whole way, truck around 10,000lb, AC on temp gauge never got above 200. WHen i stop i can move my clutch fan by hand pretty easily too. I can hear my fan accelerating from a stop not driving though.

235 the radiator looks good. It's has a new radiator, water pump, thermostat, lines, heater core even. It's pretty much the only thing left in the system that's old and it doesn't look to old but i have no real way too tell is age

It's an aluminum two core. I did just notice when i turn the clutch fan it makes a bit of noise. It didn't do that before that i can recall

Rockcrawler--I have about the same cooling setup as you, 10 month old 2 core aluminum radiator, Motorcraft t-stat, Motorcraft water pump less than 6 months old, new fan clutch and my truck stays pretty cool. Just did a 700 mile road trip from Santa Cruz to Eureka and back with a few 7%-9% grades in there--mechanical coolant gauge never went over 205 even with 100 degree weather at times. There's a 10% grade I climb just about everyday and even with 3500lbs in the bed and pushing high RPMS(N/A here) I can't push the temps over 210-215. There must be something wrong but I can't imagine it being the fan clutch since I'm pretty sure mine has never turned on--at least it never "sounded" like it was on.

I took it for a test run with the new clutch fan. It ran a lot better but still was getting up to 230. You would hear the fan kick into high gear and it would come back down. The only thing i can think of now is maybe my timing is off on the injection pump. It was only 70 degrees out and i was towing in rolling hills here in Hollister area.

Does it look like there's ever been any stop leak in it? Does your lower radiator hose have a spring? I forgot im sure you answered but how old is the thermstat and are you sure it's a motorcraft? There was a guy on one of these forums who cursed up and down how he hated the aluminum radiators and it was just and his truck kept overheating and it turned out he forgot to remove the plastic plug from the radiator when he installed it. Any chance you left a rag stuffed in radiator when replacing water pump or blocked anything off any forgot about it? I've done it before.

It's all new. Not motorcraft thermostat. 195 degree one. It works better then the one i pulled out. I put the coil into the bottom radiator hose. At this point in going to run it and hour for the best. I leave on Wednesday morning for the Rubicon. I have had everything apart so many times now and flushed the system that what ever was in there if there was something should be gone

The original thermostat that didn't work as well was doing the same thing. The stickies just say to use motocraft and gives no reason. Is this the problem that was described with other thermostats?
