That's interesting. That may be why the clips don't have much grip as they could have been made with much more grip.

I think that's a very good idea if they fit.
1) Don't use sheet rock screws! They are not intended for outdoor applications and with the slightest corrosion they are likely to break off at the heads (even without corrosion). Use galvanised or coated screws if they will work.
There are other kinds of anchors, expansion anchors etc. if you can find any short enough- not sure how much space is there behind the hole (rainy and wet where my truck is parked in long grass so I don't want to go out and look).
Light (thin) fender washers would work and metal insulation plates designed to anchor wood fiber and perlite insulation might work better but where to get in small quantity? Local roofing contractors that do flat roofs (asphalt) should have open boxes lying around and might take the time to grab what you need. They look like this. The ones with the tiny punched holes around the center have small barbs on the other side intended to hold single ply roofing membranes down under the seams helping to prevent them from slipping and pulling against the seams but you can just flatten those with a light tap from a hammer and they'll function the same. Plastic insulation plates are 3 in dia. a bit too big:

As far as fire under the hood in a diesel? ... your decision on that, although I've thought about carrying a small fire extinguisher to help someone else out.

I just went out and took a couple of pictures of my 87 which should be identical to your 89.
I used an inside micrometer in the holes and on my truck they are 1/8 inch (3.175mm).
Will take awhile to get a photo up. I THINK these should be the same on gas engine trucks and there are lots of those in wrecking yards- I'd have to confirm that first, maybe the diesels had thicker insulation- or....

I saw the saddest thing today. Four I6 300 in the boneyard. One with no head on it rusted up but MAYBE savable, anouther with no oil cap on. I actually put it on.

Thank you TahoeTom. I'll look that up and their catalogue should indicate a difference between 83-86 and 87-97.
If not too expensive with shipping I would prefer to use those.

Here are a couple of photos.
1) the clips go like this around the hood and if you look carefully you will see an X pattern across the middle of the hood. Clips go there too but mine are missing. The damage to the insulation was from an over-sized marine battery with the negative stud terminal sticking up and contacting the hood (installed by previous owner). You can see a dent in the metal from it. This caused a spooky electrical mystery: full voltage in the truck when BOTH neg. battery cables were disconnected. It also caused the hood not to close properly and I dented a corner of the hood trying to get it aligned. I have a good 92 hood with insulation to replace this one- again the X across center also gets clips.
Next: Close up of missing clip and hole which is 1/8 inch. The original old clips didn't hold, new GM clips didn't hold and I have about 4-5 like this right now plus the missing clips at the X.

I still have a '90 hood sitting in my yard, it has intact insulation, anybody who would like me to attempt to remove the clips for them can have them for the cost of mailing if they survive, just send a PM

My holes are definitely closer to .250 or 1/4". I had a regular blue 1/4" drywall anchor laying around so I tried it and it went right in place with just a little resistance like you would want. I then tried a sheetmetal screw and everything was fine till the screw hit the tip of the anchor. When it hits the tip it's supposed to bust the tip open and flare it out to hold it in the drywall. But being in this sheetmetal when the screw hit the tip, instead of busting it out the whole anchor started spinning in the hood. I easily backed the screw back out. If you found a screw that would hold the insulation without being too long and hitting the tip of the plastic anchor, I think it would hold.
I went to lowe's and they had 1/4" plastic anchors that are made a little different. I am hoping they will open up and flare out easier than the other type. I also bought some 1/4" fender washers to hold the insulation. This cost me about $14.00. I went to Autozone and they had clips, but their heads are not big enough, and they want a fortune for them. I need 18 clips altogether and they sold them in packs of two for $2.99.

The measurements they list sound right too. Very large head (1 3/4"), stem diameter is 5/16". The stem diameter is the OD of the fins, the actual solid part of the stem is near 1/4". So the fins fold back and get "stuck" in the 1/4" hole in the hood. The length is almost 1 inch (29/32) which would be correct also, the insulation is very thick. That would be a big problem with the ones in the store, their stem lengths are very short. Looks like a very good deal if you get a pack of 25 for $4.31. You need 18 of them.
