I had a leaking line at the pump causing a misfire. It was cracked on the back side of the flare that seals, where the nut tightens against it. mine was missing a clamp on that line though.

If you perceive a fuel leak at one of the injectors, it is the return line cap most likely, and not the hard line. This would also explain any hard starts your having. When you put the caps on, they need to be lubricated, and snapped on with a twisting motion to get them right.

When I was trying to reach the bottom lines to replace, I used a 5/8" crow's foot, wobble extension, and a deft touch. Worked for me.

Well I got the fuel lines to quit leaking to find out That #1 cylinder is dead and has a knock. I got a good 89 junkyard motor. My question is what would you all do while it was out of the truck. It comes with a warranty so I don't want to do head studs or internal stuff for 6mos. It only has 91k on it anyway. Im going to swap my new mood pump and injectors as well as my turbo. Thanx in advance for any suggestions

Before removing the engine for a dead cylinder try replacing the injector. A bad injector will cause a knock very much like a rod knock. If you don't have another spare injector just swap the number 1 injector for another cylinder. See if the dead cylinder follows.

I was going to suggest swapping an injector also, til I went back and read they came from Mel. Lol
Still switch it with another cylinder, it the deadness follows, it's the injector.

My thinking is that I ran the truck too long with the bad injector/ip and damaged the piston. I would think the odds of getting a new, tested but bad injector from Mel must be very slim. I will swap the injectors and see. It also smokes like a house on fire. It starts really, really easy. Just hit the key and it fires right up. That also makes me think it's not fuel/air related. if you loosen the hardline there is no change at #1 but a noticeable change everywhere else. If it is a bad injector, the symptoms should follow to where I swap it to? Thanx for all the comments.

Ok, swapped 1 and 2 injectors. #1 still dead/ no change when hard line loosened. Also, there were some fine metal filings on the bottom of the injector. I'm guessing I made junk? Anybody in agreement? Thanx

Yes from what you have done I feel its something mechanical in the cylinder. Might be a broken valve but you wont know till the head comes off. Might be a broken valve spring or some valve train issue too. The metal found on the injector tip tells me something is going on in the cylinder. A broken valve spring can allow a valve to contact the piston and remove metal. Is the metal magnetic or not???

Great suggestion, Gary. I never thought to check. At this point I just want to get my truck back on the road. I will wedge the new junk yard motor in and rebuild the old one. I'll swap my new fuel system over and do some upgrades: carrier pump, Powerstroke electric vac pump, re-seal the oil cooler, new water pump and stat, etc. I'll keep the rebuild until I blow up the jy motor and swap/ rebuild. A 1200# round robin. Thanx to all on the site for the help and I will keep you all posted with my progress if there is interest.

I'm going to do a south bend solid flywheel conversion too. Anyone using a south bend kit they love? I usually just call and they decide and make what I need.

Yep, did hydroboost conversion a few months ago. Best upgrade ever. I actually have brakes now. The Powerstroke unit does hvac and lock out hubs so it should be plenty to do my hvac and cruise control that I have never used.
